AGNES IRENE COLUMBIA, 102, A plains homesteader's daughter, escaped the pain of a worn out and broken body to live in the Lord's House on Friday, November 29, 2013 from the Hospice & Palliative Care of Northern Colorado in Greeley. Agnes was born to Aaron & Ethel (Birt) Mimmert in Mayetta, KS on December 17, 1910. She moved with family in 1914 to her father's second homestead, twelve miles south of Fort Morgan. She rode by horse and wagon with a milk cow tied behind to live in the barn while her father built their house. Agnes' mother died in 1919 as a result of the Great Influenza Epidemic. Agnes attended rural schools, leaving high school for two years to help on the farm. She returned to school and graduated from Fort Morgan High School in 1930. Struggling to survive during The Great Depression and the dustbowl, Agnes stayed working on the farm until the late 1930's, when she moved to town and worked for the Spencer's at The Fort Morgan Times until she got a job at the Fort Morgan Hospital. Agnes married Ross Columbia on August 15, 1946 after he returned to the states from his discharge from the Pacific. They began farming in the Jackson Lake/Goodrich area until 1959 when they bought a farm west of Fort Morgan. Ross died in 1977. Agnes moved to Centennial in Brush several years later where she spent 25 happy years. After turning 100, a fall prevented her from living independently and she moved to Bonell Good Samaritan Center in Greeley where she enjoyed all the activities, especially Bingo. Agnes was an excellent homemaker, cook, baker, and gardener. She always had pies, cakes, and cookies in the oven, and grew enough in her garden that she always had plenty to give away. Agnes was a member of The First Christian Church in Fort Morgan. She is survived by her two sons, Charles And James. Graveside services will be at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, December 3rd in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Fort Morgan. Visitation will be prior to the service from 10 AM until 12 Noon at the Heer Mortuary in Fort Morgan. Memorial donations may be made to the First Christian Church in Fort Morgan or to the charity of your choice.
