Obituary

Albert "Al" Melcher, passed away on February 2, 2018 at Garden Terrace Alzheimer's Center of Excellence in Aurora, CO. He was born on February 24, 1929 in Fort Morgan, CO.

Al grew up in Fort Morgan, CO and when he was 18 years old he enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Landshut, Germany. After serving 4 years, he was honorably discharged. Returning to Fort Morgan, he farmed with his family for several years. He also worked as Assistant Manager for Eaker's Department Store. He then went to work for the United States Post Office and his assignments advanced quickly until he received his appointment to the Burlington Post Office as Postmaster. His postal career spanned 32 years and he received the Superior Accomplishment and Performance award in 1974 and the Postmaster of the Year award in 1983. He was the President of the Colorado National League of Postmasters for 7 years and served 2 terms as the Vice President of the Retired Postmasters League. He retired in 1986 and moved to Loveland, CO in 1991.

Al married Leona on August 1, 1954 in Fort Morgan, CO. They were happily married for 63 years and together they raised four children. Al was a faithful church member in each of the towns he lived in, most recently Faith Church in Loveland, CO. Al had a passion for singing and from a very young age he sang in the church choir. Additionally he sang with a Barber Shop quartet and anytime you asked him, he would be delighted to sing you a song in either English or German. He was a member of the Jaycees and served as a Boy Scouts of America Scoutmaster for several years. Al enjoyed spending time with his friends and family, gardening with his grandchildren, creating Christmas light displays, taking his dog Loki for walks, and compiling family photos. He also enjoyed researching his family history and playing the lottery.

Al is survived by his spouse Leona (Gimbel) of Greeley, CO; his daughters Laura (Mark) Hansen and Cindy Motiff both of Fort Collins, CO; his son James (Carol) Melcher of Knightdale, NC; his grandchildren Jeremy (Delia) Kobobel, Joshua (Ashley) Kobobel, Allen (Josie) Hansen, Marisa Motiff, Zachary Motiff, Kera (Damon) Hafshejani, Jacob Melcher, and Ember Melcher; his great-grandchildren Joshua, Jesse, and Hope Kobobel, and Ariana and Cyrus Hafshejani.

Al was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Molly (Sagel) Melcher; his brothers, Leland Melcher and Leroy Melcher; his son, Randy Melcher, and his son-in-law, Randy Motiff.

A funeral service will be held at Immanuel Evangelical Church, 318 West Seventh Avenue, Fort Morgan, CO on February 9, 2018. Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m., followed by the funeral at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow in Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
