Antonia "Tonie" Johnston, 95, longtime area resident, died Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at the East Morgan County Hospital in Brush. She was born May 20, 1916 in Las Vegas, New Mexico to Gregorio and Vicenta (Martinez) Romero. She moved with her family from Las Vegas to Brush in 1923. Tonie was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Brush. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening, taking care of her pets, bird watching and was actually still raking her own leaves at the age of 95. She loved her family and they were very important to her. Survivors include one daughter, Mary Ellen Birch of Golden Valley, Arizona, two sons, Rudy Tapia of Berkley, Massachusetts and Ken Tapia of Brush, 17 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren. Tonie was preceded in death by her two husbands, Marion Tapia who died in 1957 and Otis L. Johnston who died in 2007. She and Otis had been married for over 47 years. Also preceding her death were five brothers, Carl, Laido, Ernst, Phillip and Ted Romero and one sister, Frances Garcia. Memorial Services will be Monday, November 28, 2011 at 2:00 pm at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Brush. Services will conclude at the church. Memorial Gifts may be made to the Morgan County Humane Society. The Heer & Dahl Mortuary in Brush is in charge of the arrangements.
