Ralph "Art" Carlson, 90, passed away early Tuesday, May 15, 2007, at the Inpatient Hospice Unit at North Colorado Medical Center. He was born November 14, 1916, in Windsor, CO, to Hulda & Pete Carlson shortly after they arrived from Blekinge and Gothenberg, Sweden. His first home was 2 miles southwest of Windsor. He grew up in the Windsor area and attended the Lucas LaGrange School six months prior to first grade in order to learn the English language. He continued in that school and later went to Lucas School, southwest of Eaton as well as Windsor High School graduating in 1934. He married his high school sweetheart, Helen Lillie Hickman on June 27, 1937. They celebrated 64 years together before Helen passed away. They farmed and fed livestock southwest of Eaton for 23 years before moving to a farm near Hillrose, CO. After retiring from farming in 1966, the Carlsons moved to Fort Morgan where Art worked in the maintenance department of Morgan Community College. In 2000 the Carlsons moved to The Arbor at Eben Ezer Lutheran Care Center in Brush. He loved golf, fishing and hunting especially with his sons and grandson. He also enjoyed playing cribbage and other card games at the Fort Morgan Elks with his friends. He was a member fo the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Fort Morgan and earlier, Immanuel Lutheran Church in Greeley. He served on the church council and the building committee for the existing church and also served as a 4-H Leader. In addition to the Elks Lodge, Art was a member of the Masonic Lodge and The Shrine. Art was a devoted and much loved grandfather and father. He was a friend to all and a gentle caring soul who will be missed by all who knew and loved him. His friends and family recently helped him to celebrate his 90th birthday with a big birthday bash in Fort Morgan. Survivors include his daughter, Janet Johnson from Greeley; 2 sons, James, and his wife, Diane, from Sandpint, ID, and Jerry, and his wife, Robin, from Atlanta, GA; granddaughters, Anita Danford, and her husband, Scott; Kris Whapshare, and her husband, Gavin; Lenzie Mauzey, and her husband, Jason, and Ebby Borchert; 4 grandsons, Andrew Carlson, and his wife, Genevieve; Scott Johnson, and his wife, Erika; Rob Johnson, and his wife, Allison; Aaron Carlson, and his wife, Tara; 11 great grandchildren, several nieces & nephews; and a special friend, Jane Van Dyke. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; an infant son, William; a grandson, Jason Carlson; 3 brothers, and his parents. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 19, 2007, at 2:00 pm at the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, 1100 W. Platte Avenue in Fort Morgan. Inurnment will be in Memory Gardens.
