Obituary

Arthur C. Johnston died October 10, 2009 at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, CO after a short illness. Art was born March 24, 1930 to Gertrude and Cecil Johnston in Windsor Ontario Canada. After schooling in London, Ontario he left Canada and came to the United States and settled in the Denver area, where he joined the Army Corp. He was discharged in 1950 but was recalled in 1951 for the Korean conflict. In 1954 he started in the insurance business in the claims department with Employer Insurance Group of Boston and worked his way through the ranks in underwriting and became a special agent for the company in Colorado and Wyoming. In 1958 he entered the agency side of the business and was employed by the Ralph P. King Agency in Montrose, CO. He left the agency in 1958 to join Berryhill Agency in Fort Morgan and purchased that agency in 1967 and changed the name to Art Johnson, Inc. He owned and worked in that agency until 2002 when he sold the business and officially retired to the golf course. His entire business life was devoted to insurance and to his customers, many of whom remain friends. Being very active in the industry he was President of the Colorado Insurers Assn in 1972, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Colorado Insurers Assn in 1973. In 1974 he received the highest award, Colorado Insurer of the Year and also served as a state national director of the National Association. During this time he was also a member of several companies' agent councils and was a member of Commercial Union National Council. Also active in the community, he served as President of the Fort Morgan Rotary Club in 1967 and was a director of Fort Morgan Chamber of Commerce from 1971-1974. He was President of the Fort Morgan Country Club in 1972. Art was preceded in death by his parents and 3 sisters. He is survived by his wife, Sue, of Fort Morgan; his daughter Deb Forstedt of Fort Morgan, daughter Lori Iungerich of Fort Morgan, son Brett Johnston of Littleton, CO and son, Bart Johnston, of Parker, CO. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren with another expected next January. He is also survived by his sister Cecille Guth of Rocklin, CA and sister Pat Latham of Oak Harbor, WA. Art loved his family unconditionally and also the game of golf. One of his happiest moments was when he finally his a hole-in-one on the 16th hole of the Fort Morgan Golf Course in August, 2006. A celebration of his life will be held at the Life Fellowship Church at 8th and Barlow in Fort Morgan at 4:00 PM, Wednesday, October 14, 2009 with a reception immediately following at the family's home at 109 Fairway Lane, Fort Morgan. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Art Johnston Golf Scholarship Fund in care of the Heer and Dahl Mortuary.
