Bernard "Bernie" Johansen, 102, long time Brush area resident, died Tuesday morning at the East Morgan County Hospital in Brush. He was born July 30, 1907 in Wilmont, SD. To Christopher and Laura (Lassen) Johansen. In September of 1916 his family moved to Gary, CO where he helped his father farm for several years. He joined the National Guard and was stationed at Camp Carson. He married Helen Person February 18, 1931 in Sterling. They moved to Brush in 1932. He owned a sweet shop that is now the Sands Theater, he also had many jobs throughout his life, he managed the Rediess Market for 3 years, he worked for Safeway, the Farmers Elevator, the Police Department, for the Brush Hospital as a maintenance man, for Charles Beery farming and ranching, for the McLangs Dairy making deliveries, for Gambles, and for the Farmers State Bank for 20 years, he was also the caretaker for the Armory. He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, a 43 year member of the Dahlia Club, and he was a charter member of the Brush Lions Club. He is a retired member of the Brush Volunteer Fire Department. He was Grand Marshal of the Fourth of July Parade in 2007 at the age of 100. He enjoyed bowling, growing flowers and gardening, and spending time with his friends at the Bakery. He is survived by 4 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and 2 great- great grandchildren, and his neighbor and good friend Gen Newberg. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen, his daughter Merietta Madsen, his son Bernard Jr., 1 brother, 3 sisters and his parents. A visitation will be held on Thursday at 2-5 pm at the Heer & Dahl Mortuary in Brush. A funeral service will be held on Friday at 10:30 am at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Brush. Interment will follow in the Brush memorial Cemetery.
