Betty A. Matson-Moser, age 94,of Brush, passed away early Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at the Eben Ezer Lutheran Care Center in Brush, Colorado. She was born May 19, 1918 in Clay, New York to Howard and Anna Hess. The Hess family moved to a farm in Rushville, Nebraska in 1921. Following her graduation from Rushville High School, Betty attended business college in Rapid City, South Dakota. She married Scott L. Matson on June 26, 1938 in Rapid City. The Matson family lived in Rapid City until 1943 when they moved to California so Scott could work in the naval shipyards. In 1946 they moved back to Rapid City. During her homemaker years, which she considered the most satisfying of her life, Betty enjoyed bowling and archery. She was an Avon lady back when you went selling door to door. She was employed at the Pennington County Treasurer's Office for over 15 years, serving as Deputy Treasurer. Her husband Scott died in 1982. Betty retired in 1983. She was a active member of the Canyon Lake Senior Citizens Center, where she was involved in playing various card games. Betty met her second husband Les Moser at the Senior Center. On December 17, 1984 Betty & Les married in Rapid City. Desiring to experience being snowbirds, they traveled to Arizona. During this time they were involved in a traffic accident and Les died of injuries suffered in this crash. In 2006, Betty moved to Brush, Colorado to be closer to her daughter. She continued living in Brush until her death. While living in Rapid City, Betty attended the First Evangelical Free Church. She enjoyed playing card games of all kinds, crossword puzzles, playing slot machines, stamp and coin collecting, and spending time with her family. Survivors include her four children: Ken Matson of Iowa City, Iowa; Barry Matson of Rochester, Minnesota; Karl (Landis) Matson of Rapid City; and Carol (Don) Heer of Brush, Colorado; Five Grandchildren, Steven Matson, Jill Shepherd, Gary Heer, Emily Matson, and Rachel Dunn; 3 step-grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren and several step great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her brother Bill Hess and her parents. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 27, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the Serenity Springs Funeral Home in Rapid City, South Dakota. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 26th from 5-7 PM at the Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City.
