Billy Eugene Dorn was born November 25, 1934 and left us here on earth Friday morning from his home in Grand Junction, Colorado. He was born with the help of a midwife in a small farmhouse located one mile North of the South Platte River close to Hillrose, Colorado. Billy was the 6th child of eleven children born to Fred and Anna Loose Dorn. He spent his childhood in the Hillrose, Weldona and Ft. Morgan, Colorado area. He grew up on the farm in very tough times. He graduated from high school in Weldona in 1953 and earned a basketball and academic scholarship to Northeastern College in Sterling, Colorado. He graduated from there in 1955. He married Marilyn Barton in May of 1956 and to that union was born four daughters. Marilyn and Bill were divorced in 1989. He married Cara Lynn Taylor in December of 1991. Billy joined the Navy in 1955. He received many promotions and awards during his tenure in the military. He was most proud of earning the tiles of "Honor Man" Company 505 and especially honored to receive the award of "Sailor of the Month" in August of 1959. He attended the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps School and served at Corona Naval hospital in California. He also completed training at the Military Justice School in Rhode Island and returned to work in the Security Division at the base in Corona. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in September of 1959. Billy loved to build structures and after his military service he started a construction company business with his brothers Don and Don's partner. It was at this time that he learned the design phase of construction and became an Architectural Designer. Later Billy and brothers Don and Jerry formed Dorn Brother's Construction Company in 1965. Their work was noted and sought after by several big names in the business and they completed some very big jobs, such as a large hotel in Vail, several large homes, some small homes too, hotels and renovation of an existing building on 32nd and Market Street in Denver, Colorado just to name a few. During the busy time with Dorn Brother's he managed to construct a couple of homes for himself and his family and he designed and built and operated the Best Western Sundowner Motel in Sterling, Colorado for which he won the coveted "Golden Crown" award more than once. There are only 35 of these awards given each year out of 2500 chains world-wide ! In 1989, Billy accepted a position working as a civilian for the United States Military in Germany. He was Designer and Project Manager for the area and job consisted of Administrator, Principle Advisor, Analyst and Coordinator of MWR related facilities renovation and new construction. All of these duties and he was a department of one. He managed quite well. He received numerous awards and Accolades for his work. Projects he oversaw to completion were: 500 room hotel; a 750 room hotel, two retail stores; five clubs; golf course club house; rod and gun club; bowling center; Army community service center; three child development centers; two youth centers; arts and crafts center and two fitness centers. There were many others too numerous to mention. He was proud that these projects were completed mostly on time and on or under budget. The Brass really appreciated his efficiency and he loved serving the Military personnel and their families in quality-of-life issues. He retired in March of 2000 and he and Cara moved back to the U.S. Surviving family members include his beloved wife of 20 years, Cara Dorn of Grand Junction, CO , four daughters; Debbie Thatcher (Rick) of Fruita, CO., Denise Miller (Gary) of Sterling, CO., Diana Ward (Jim) of Red Feather Lakes, CO., and Donna Veal (Dave) of Sterling, CO., and one step daughter Renee Haskins (Robert) of Hollister, CA., sister Mary Ann Meng of Ft. Morgan, CO., Brother Don Dorn of Watkins, CO., sister Donna Dorn of Loveland, CO., sister Shirley Aggson of Berthoud, CO., sister Nancy Lampe of Ft. Morgan, CO., brother Bob Dorn of Ft. Morgan, CO., and brother Ed Dorn of Anaheim Hills, CA., 11 grandchildren, 1 step grandson, 14 great grandchildren and 3 step great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 10:30 am at the First Christian Church 225 West Bijou Ave. in Ft. Morgan. Inurnment will follow in the Serenity Falls Columbarium. The Heer & Dahl Mortuaries and Crematory are in charge of the local arrangements.
