Clarence "Barney" Sanders, 89, longtime Ft. Morgan resident, died Tuesday evening at his home in Ft. Morgan. He was born July 24, 1919 in Florence, CO to Barnie and Margaret Sanders. Barney went to college for one year before WWII began and he joined the United State Navy. He served as a Navy Corpman aboard the destroyer ship Samuel D. Porter in the Pearl Harbor and the Alleutian Islands. He married Dorothy Deppen September 13, 1941 in Taos, New Mexico. Barney graduated from Colorado University in 1948. He began teaching in Del Norte, CO, where he taught for five years before moving to Ft. Morgan. He taught chemistry and coached wrestling and football. He enjoyed following the teams until his death. After retiring from the Fort Morgan school district, Barny was Dean of Academics at the Morgan Community College. Barney spent his summers working as a park ranger in the Yellowstone National Park. He was involved in many community activities, serving on the City Council, as Past Master of the Local Masonic Lodge, and as District Lecturer for the State Masonic Grand Lodge. Barney enjoyed fly fishing, tying flies, and building rods, he especially enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. He is survived by his wife Dorothy of Ft. Morgan, two daughters, Pat Canales and Cathy Dahl and husband Mike all of Ft. Morgan, seven grandchildren, Lisa Canales, Keri Bath, Kayla Canales Babkiewich, Ann Hale, and Krysta Dahl all of Ft. Morgan and Kent Bath and Brad Dahl both of Greeley, five great grandchildren, Kortney Hale, Nash Babkiewich, Kaleb Green, Kade Babkiewich, and Ashton Hale, and one sister, Arlene Gilman of Benicia, CA. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Whitson, and Mildred Keller, and his parents. A memorial service will be held on Monday December 15, 2008 at 10:30 am at the United Methodist Church, 117 E. Bijou in Fort Morgan. Inurnment will follow at 2:00 pm at the Serenity Falls Columbarium in Ft. Morgan. Friends who wish may make memorial donations in Barney's name in care of the Heer Mortuary 225 E. Platte Ave. Ft.
