Cleo Belle Zarbock, 97, lifelong area resident, died Sunday, June 22, 2014 on the family ranch north of Ft. Morgan. She had been cared for by Betty Longacre and her family. Cleo was born July 31, 1916 in Banner County, Nebraska, on their homestead near the old town of Freeport, south of Wildcat Hills and McGrew. Her parents were Walter A. and Myrtle A. (Jones) Longacre. Her family moved to Brush in 1917, then to their farm and ranch seven miles north of Ft. Morgan on the Wildcat Creek in 1918. Her neighbors called her "Joybells". Cleo attended school in a one room country school one mile south of the ranch through the 3rd grade. She walked almost every day. She then attended school in Ft. Morgan graduating from high school in 1934. She got a scholarship to the Colorado Women's College but turned it down, eventually going to Business School in Denver. She married "the boy next door" Henry Zarbock on February 14, 1938 in Ft. Morgan. She worked at the J.C. Penney Company in Ft. Morgan and later transferred to Penney's in Denver. She also worked for the Bowman Biscuit Company, picking crackers off of wooden slats and packing them in boxes, the Farmers Union Insurance Company, the Crosta Sheet Metal Company as a billing and inventory clerk, finally getting a Civil Service job as a secretary with the U.S. Bureau of Mines. She retired with 23 years of service in 1981. Cleo held every office in the Federal Foothills Toastmistress Club, and some of those, several times. Cleo enjoyed spending time with her family, taking lots of pictures, making candy, crocheting, needle point, counted cross stich, traveling, gardening, canning, and swinging on swing sets with her nephews and nieces. Survivors include many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Henry, sister, Velma Luce, brothers, Laurence and Walter Longacre, and her parents. Funeral Services will be Monday, June 30, 2014 at 10:00 am at the Platte Valley Baptist Church in Ft. Morgan. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens.
