Dale Raymond Stinton was born March 12, 1930 at the family home on Emerson Street in Brush to parents, Aljy & Irene Stinton. He grew up attending Brush Schools, graduating from BHS in 1948 and serving as Class President that year. He attended the University of Colorado in Boulder and graduated in the spring of 1952 with a BA in Business Administration. In the summer of 1952, he enlisted in the US Navy, commissioned as an Ensign. He spent the next three years as an officer on the destroyer, the USS Taussig, in the Pacific during the Korean War. He was assigned as a gunnery officer until his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1955, with the rank of Lieutenant. In 1954, he married Marilyn Elaine Ackley at the Methodist Church in Brush. Dale & Marilyn's three children were all born in Brush. Upon release from the Navy, he returned to Brush where he began employment with the Farmers State Bank, and after three years was promoted to manager of Equitable Savings and Loan Association, serving as manager for twenty-one years. In June 1979 he resigned from Equitable, to go into business for himself as owner and manager of Ackley Building Center. He and his wife, Marilyn successfully operated the lumber yard in Brush until 1991 when the business was sold to Marc Tormohlen. Dale, along with his wife Marilyn, have owned and managed the Ackleyn Court in Brush for fifty-seven years. The Ackleyn Court is a 30 unit housing complex, build originally in 1956 by Marilyn's parents, Bill and Hazel Ackley, to provide affordable housing for retired people. Throughout his adult life, Dale was involved in the community, serving in many leadership roles. He was a loyal member of the Brush United Methodist Church where he was a constituent of the building and planning committee for the new church built on Edmunds Street in 1959. Dale was a member of the Church Official Board, served as lay leader, sang tenor in the choir and served the church during his 60 years of membership. Dale was on the board of the Brush Chamber of Commerce, including two years as treasurer. He was Scoutmaster for Brush Troop #28 for four years and Chairman of the Pioneer Trails District of the Boy Scouts in NE Colorado. Dale was on the board of the Brush Meals and Friendship, Director for the Brush Head Start program and served a term as Brush City Councilman, and was Brush City Treasurer for two years. Dale served from 1993-2003 on the Board of Directors for the Brush UMC Head Start. He served eight years as a board of director of the East Morgan County Hospital District and for the Caring for Tomorrow Foundation. Dale was treasurer of the Board of Trustees of the Brush Area Museum & Cultural Center and served for ten years as a board member. Dale was a long-time member of the Brush Rotary Club, including serving as President in 1972-73. He was a member of American Legion Post #68. Dale always enjoyed travel, sports and family activities and events. Dale and Marilyn have traveled to every one of the 50 states and participated in numerous Elderhostel trips throughout the world. Dale and Marilyn attended CU home football games for over fifty years, and many Broncos, Rockies and Nuggets games. Supporting children and grandchildren in all of their sporting events was always a priority! Kemo, Dixie, Downtown Brown and Baby Doll, Dale & Marilyn's horses, have been a huge source of pleasure for Dale and the whole family. In retirement, Dale became the Brush Historian, and for many years wrote a weekly column for the Brush News-Tribune, "A Bit of History." In 2012 Dale wrote and published a book, "A Bit of Brush History." He made a book-release presentation at the Brush Museum in May 2012 and hosted book signings at the library and the museum. He donated his book and the rights to the book, along with all proceeds from the sale of his book to the Brush Area Museum and Cultural Center. As a life-long member of the Brush Community, he has received many honors and special recognitions: Brush Chamber of Commerce award as Volunteer of the Year 2010 Honor Flight Northern Colorado 2012 Brush Chamber of Commerce, Lifetime Achievement Award 1999 Angels Among Us Co-recipient with Marilyn Stinton, 2012 Main Street Spirit of Brush Award, given to Dale Stinton, Author of "A Bit of Brush History" 2013 Dale is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marilyn, children, Cindy Paulson of Fort Collins, Carter & Leianne Stinton of Sherwood, Oregon, and Jenni Laverenz of Brush. Grandchildren include Laura Paulson, Kathryn & Zach Hobbs, Anthony & Katie Stinton, Carlee & Dan Bolthouse, Shane & DaMara Laverenz, and Abby Laverenz. Great-grandchildren are Nolan Hobbs, Kane Bolthouse and Julia Stinton. Dale has one brother, John (Jack) Stinton of Seymour, TN. Friends who wish may send contributions to Dale Stinton Memorial, c/o Heer Mortuary. The United Methodist Church of Brush and the East Morgan County Hospital Foundation have been chosen as beneficiaries of the Dale Stinton Memorial. A funeral service will be Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at the Brush United Methodist Church at 1701 Edmunds Street. Military honors and interment will follow at the Brush Memorial Cemetery.
