David L.
Roberts
Jul 2, 1934 — Jan 10, 2023
David L Roberts, beloved father, grandfather and friend, passed away on January 10, 2023 at the age of 88. David was born July 2, 1934 in Ryan, Oklahoma to Roscoe and Gladys Roberts. He spent his school years in Oklahoma and Texas following the various postings of his father's service in the army. David was a bright student, graduating from high school in Dallas at the age of 15. He moved to Fort Collins attending what was then Colorado A&M College, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Range Management in 1955. Shortly afterwards, David met Grace Huttig and the two were married on July 1, 1956. David soon decided that a life in the Soil Conservation Service was not his calling and he entered law school at the University of Denver, earning his law degree in 1959. David and Grace moved to Fort Morgan the next year as David joined the Law Offices of George Epperson and Don McClary. David eventually opened his own law office in 1962 and practiced law in Fort Morgan for 53 years, including serving thirty-one years as Fort Morgan City Attorney. In addition to his service to the City of Fort Morgan, David served for several years as Town Attorney for Log Lane Village and nearly 50 years as attorney for the Morgan County Rural Electric Association. David was also a member of the Fort Morgan Order of the Elks, where he served as a reliable clean-up batter for the fast-pitch softball team. He was also president of the Fort Morgan Optimist Club.
David and Grace were blessed with two boys, Craig and Clark, and enjoyed supporting the boys' many school and sporting activities. David's booming voice could often be heard urging on the Fort Morgan Mustangs at his sons' basketball games. David loved the Colorado mountains and especially enjoyed the time he spent volunteering at the boys' summer Boy Scout camps and fishing on the South St. Vrain river at the family cabin near Allenspark. He and Grace also loved to travel, even taking Clark and Craig to visit cities in Eastern Europe at a time when Europe was still divided by the Cold War.
David loved motorcycle touring and over many years and trips with his boys, he eventually rode his motorcycle to every state in the lower 48.
David lost his wife of 50 years, Grace Elizabeth, to cancer in 2006. After Grace died, he continued his private law practice, eventually retiring in 2014. In his final years, he enjoyed visits with his grandchildren and cherished his opportunity to watch them grow up and make their way in the world. He was also fortunate to have a warm and lasting friendship with fellow Fort Morgan resident Thelma Downing. David and Thelma shared an interest in local history and collaborated on a project showcasing the history of the one-room school houses of Morgan County. Their work "Portraits of the Past: Revisiting the days of one-room school houses" showcased at the Fort Morgan Museum in 2015.
David was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Roberts and his sister, Jennie Bireline. He is survived by his son, Craig Roberts, and daughter-in law, Amy Roberts, of Eagle CO; his son Clark Roberts and daughter-in-law Cari Roberts, of Centennial, CO and his grandchildren Connor Roberts, Ellen Roberts, Molly Roberts and Zach Kleiner. The best Christmas present for our family this season was the gift of one last Christmas dinner with him at our table. The family will hold private services.
