D. L. "Swede" Reyman, 86, longtime residence of Fort Morgan, died Sunday, May 9, 2010 at the Collier Hospice Center in Wheatridge following a seven month illness. Mr. Reyman was born October 7, 1923 in Hartley, Iowa to Lee and Florence (Erbis) Reyman. As a child his parents moved to Valley Center, Kansas where Swede grew up with his older brother Emmet (Bub) and two sisters, Mildred (Mickey) and Melba. Swede enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 after the attack on Pearl Harbor and served in World War II in Canada and in the Pacific Theater as a paratrooper. He was discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1945. On January 19, 1946 he married Hope Carol Enger in Worthington, Minnesota. Hope and Swede became engaged by mail while Swede was stationed overseas and they didn't meet face to face until shortly before the wedding. Some thought it would never last, but that was 64 years ago! Swede hired on with Continental Oil Co. in 1946 in Valley Center, Kansas and in 1951 was transferred to Linch, Wyoming and later to Fort Morgan. After being transferred back to Linch, Swede left Conoco and established the Reyman Oil Field Service in Fort Morgan in 1963. In honor of his training as a paratrooper, Swede has made 28 parachute jumps in his lifetime, notably on the 50th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy, France in 1994 at the age of 71; in Moscow, Russia in May of 1995 for V-E Day; and in Sidney, Australia in August of 1995 for the Victory in the Pacific anniversary. His last jump was at the age of 73 on July 3, 1997 in San Diego, California. Since retiring from his business in 2003 Swede and Hope have been known as Number One Boosters of the Fort Morgan High School Mustangs sports teams. Swede took pictures of all the teams and all the proms. Hope made picture albums and sewed warming bags for the players. As a couple they have been honored as "Channel 7 Home Town Heroes", 2007 Citizens of the Year by the Fort Morgan Chamber of Commerce; Boy Scout Citizens of the Year, Rotary Club Citizen of the Year and have their own reserved parking space at the Fort Morgan High School football field. He was also a life member of the VFW Post #2551, the Masonic Lodge #67 and the Shrine. Swede is preceeded in death by his parents, his brother Emmett, sisters Mickey and Melba and a grandson, Jacob Reyman. He is survived by his wife, Hope of Ft. Morgan; four sons, D.L. Reyman Jr. of Fort Morgan, William Reyman of Arvada; James Reyman of Burlington and Jeffrey Reyman of Fort Morgan, seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 12th, 2010 from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Heer & Dahl Mortuary in Fort Morgan. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, May 13th, 2010 at 2:30 pm at the United Methodist Church in Fort Morgan. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens. Memorial Gifts may be made in Swede's name in care of the mortuary.
