Dorothy W. Hogeland, 87, long time resident of Morgan County, Colorado, went to her heavenly home, joining her husband, on December 17, 2017.

Dorothy, also known as Dottie and Dot, was the fourth and youngest child of Elizabeth (Wilson) and Joseph Hallowell, Sr., of Warminster Township, Pennsylvania. She and her siblings Joseph Jr., Katherine, and Penrose were raised on the family's dairy farm. She often shared memories of helping her mother cook big meals for the hired men, of the Irish lady who lived with the family, of playing in the fields and orchard with the neighbor children, of roller skating in the barn, of delivering asparagus with her father, of her many pet cats, and of the many happy times with her siblings. She was especially fond of the memories of her best friend, Elaine, who she remained close to all her life.

Dorothy graduated from William Tennent High School, PA where she enjoyed playing field hockey. Following high school, she worked while living at home and dating Frank Hogeland. They had attended high school together and their families were friends. Dorothy and Frank were united in marriage on May 5, 1951 at Abington Friends Meetinghouse, PA with music provided by a harpist. The flowers, lilacs, had been gathered by her sister in law, Clara Hallowell, and lilacs became the much loved flower of their anniversaries.

Dorothy was kept busy, first as a farmer's wife to Frank as he farmed the Hogeland family farm, as a pastor's wife, and as a mother to their five children Katherine (Kathy), Wayne, Caroline (Carol), Barbara, and Ruth.

She received the Lord as her Savior after she married and was baptized at Davisville Baptist Church, PA. Frank worked with the youth of the church, often times taking them to the farm for hay rides. Dorothy always had snacks and hot chocolate waiting at the house. Their home was always open to missionaries and their families and any youth who needed them.

When Frank returned to college, studying to become a pastor, the family moved to Bethanna Children's Home in Bucks County, PA. They became Uncle Frank and Aunt Dot to the children. Frank did the farming and Dorothy cooked meals, packed lunches, and helped with the care of the children. It was a happy time for the family and many lasting friendships were made.

During their life together, Frank and Dorothy served the Lord in churches in the Edler Community of Baca County, CO where she enjoyed being part of a quilting club; Yuma, CO; St. Francis, KS; and Ft. Morgan, CO. They started the Grace Bible Church in their home in Ft. Morgan in 1975, before moving to a church building. They ministered there for 38 years together and were very involved in the AWANA program for youth. Together, they also served at Camp Salvation, Camp ID-RA-HA-JE and Homestead Bible Camp.

From 1969-1972 the family owned and operated a dairy farm in the area of Waterside, PA where many friendships were made and remain today. From 1972-1975, the family returned to the Edler community where they ranched and farmed while Frank served the Edler Church. While on a trip to Florida for their son's wedding, their house burned to the ground with complete loss of all possessions.

Dorothy and Frank owned a bible book / gift shop in Ft. Morgan and the Sears store in Brush for several years. Her grandchildren loved visiting her store and spent many happy hours playing there. Dorothy also raised AKC registered German Shepherds. Dorothy made many of her daughters' dresses and cooked delicious meals for her family and their friends, who were always welcome. She was famous for her baked corn casserole at family and church dinners, made from their homegrown corn. She enjoyed reading, gardening, attending sales, refinishing furniture, caring for her many dogs, and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a woman of grace and faith and loved by all who knew her.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Frank; her parents; brother Joseph, Jr.; sister Katherine Davis; sister in law Clara Hallowell; brother in law Russel Darling; brother in law James Ward; brother in law William Sheffield; niece Susan Hallowell; nephew Frank Darling; and niece Christine Darling Maven.

She is survived by her brother Penrose Hallowell (Trish) of PA; sisters in law Jane Darling of PA, Hilda "Sis" Sheffield of PA, and Elizabeth "Liz" Pope (Charles) of DE; her children Kathy (Rob) Carman of Akron, CO; Wayne (Margret) Hogeland of Riverside, CA; Carol (Zaylan) Konkel of Vilas, CO; Barbara Brown of Brush, CO; and Ruth Larson of Mission Viejo, CA; fifteen grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and many friends across the country.

A memorial service will be held at Heer Mortuary in Fort Morgan on Friday, Jan. 5th at 11:00 am with internment to follow at the Riverside Cemetery in Ft. Morgan.
