DWAIN "DOUG" FARRIS, 70, former Fort Morgan resident, died Saturday, October 10, 2009 at the VA Medical Center in Denver after a brief illness. He was born March 5, 1939 San Angelo, TX to Everett & Elizabeth (Sherrod) Farris. He was raised by his mother and stepfather, Frankie R. Franks. Farris served in the US Marine Corps from 1957 until 1960. He married Norma Kitchings on August 18, 1961. They moved to Fort Morgan from Victoria, TX in 1964. Mr. Farris attended the FBI Academy. He served as Morgan County Undersheriff from 1965 until 1975 and then served as Chief of Police in Federal Heights until 1988. He received many awards and much recognition during his years in law enforcement. He retired from law enforcement in 1988 and began driving truck for Pacific at that time. He also spent some time in the oilfield. He lived in various places in Colorado, California, and Texas while he was driving truck. Farris left Fort Morgan for the final time in 1997 and moved to San Angelo, TX. He was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church while in Fort Morgan. Mr. Farris enjoyed golfing but he particularly enjoyed time spent with his family. Survivors include his daughter, Cheryl Silz of Golden; his sister, Mae Chandler of San Angelo, TX; his brother, Clifford Farris of Wichita Falls, TX; 6 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Robert E. Farris; his sister, Betty Anne Farris; and his son, Russell Dwain Farris. A memorial service will be Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 1:00 PM at the Heer & Dahl Mortuary Chapel in Fort Morgan. Inurnment will follow in Memory Gardens in Fort Morgan with military honors conducted by the V.F.W. Post 2551. Memorial donations may be made to the VA Medical Center in Denver.
