Ed Chartier, 96, life resident of Morgan County, passed away Tuesday, June 21, 2011, at the Eben Ezer Lutheran Care Center in Brush. He was born December 14, 1914, to Leander & Nancy Chartier in Fort Morgan. Ed served in the Colorado National Guard from 1932 until 1935, serving in Company K in the Fort Morgan unit. It was determined that he was needed to be a farmer more than an active member of the military unit. As a result, Ed was discharged. On February 2, 1937, he married Bessie Mae Gregory in Oklahoma. Bessie died in 1991. On July 4, 1992, he married Electa Smith in Akron, CO. She died in 1994. On March 27, 1996, Ed married Evelyn Pierce in Brush. Ed was a very active charter member of the New Hope Community Church, having served in nearly all the church board positions over the years. He was a member of AARP and was a member of the Brush Senior Kitchen Band for many years. He loved planting and working in his garden and collecting coins. He enjoyed planting trees, and having a dog with him as much as possible. Ed began farming with horses and got his first tractor in the early 1940's. He had a wide-spread reputation for his speed in topping sugar beets. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn of Brush; 4 children, Larry of Brush, Garry of Prescott, AZ, Donna Chartier of Durant, OK, and Barbara Refior of Plano, TX; 1 sister, Rosemary Chartier-McDaniel of Fort Morgan; 12 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren. In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by his son, Bob, in March, 2010, 1 sister, 2 brothers, 1 granddaughter, and 1 great–great grandson. Funeral services will be Monday, June 27, 2011, at 10:30 AM at the New Hope Community Church, 507 Ray Street in Brush. Interment will follow in the Brush Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Heer & Dahl Mortuary Chapel in Brush on Sunday from 3 – 5 PM. Friends who wish may make memorial gifts to the New Hope Community Church, Hospice of the Plains, or Eben Ezer Care Center, all in care of Heer & Dahl Mortuary.
