Obituary

Edith Peterson, 92, longtime resident of Snyder – Brush communities, passed away Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at the East Morgan County Hospital in Brush. She was born August 15, 1915, to Swedish immigrants Carl "Chas" & Othilia Carlson The Carlson family moved to the Johnstown / Mead community when Edith was a child. Edith attended area schools and after graduation from Johnstown High School in 1933, she went on to further her education at Colorado State Teachers' College in Greeley. Edith began teaching in a one-room school in the Antelope Springs community north of Snyder. Because at the time women teachers were required to be single, she and Maurice Peterson eloped to Kimball, NE to be married in secret. She finished the school term and then became a farm wife. During the time Edith was raising her family, she also finished her education by receiving her bachelors degree from Colorado State College of Education. She returned to teaching in 1955 when her youngest child started to school. She taught at several grade levels in the Snyder school district and when the elementary school was closed because of reorganization, she started teaching in Brush. She retired in 1976. In 1981, Edith and Maurice moving into Brush making certain they purchased a home large enough to entertain all the family at the gatherings which were so important to them. Edith helped out with farm work as a child and during her married life. She loved bowling, being one of the founders of the Brush Women's Bowling Association, doe embroidery work (especially making quilts), and spending time with her family. She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.. Survivors include her 5 children, Pat Gleason, Sharon George, Ron Peterson & Gary Peterson all of Brush, and Linnea (Skeet) Wilson of Fort Collins; 8 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 3 great - great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice, a sister, Lillie Carlson and a brother Charles Carlson, and her parents.. Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at 11:00 AM at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 603 Custer Street in Brush. Interment will be in the Brush Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Heer Mortuary in Brush on Sunday from 4 – 6 PM.
