Edward Harland McClure, ninety-eight years old, died peacefully Sunday morning January 12, 2014. He was living with his son and daughter-in-law Ralph and Margaret McClure in Brush, Colorado. Edward, known to his family as Harland, was born November 8, 1915 in Mobile, Alabama to Warner and Caroline McClure. He was the seventh of nine children. As a young man, Harland moved to Takoma Park, Maryland , became an electrician and went into business with his brother Charles McClure. During this time he met and married the love of his life, Fern Emilyn Perrin and spent sixty-five happy years with her. World War II began and Harland was drafted; the only one of six McClure brothers to be required to serve. He became a noncombatant medic in the Army and was sent to serve in the India-Burma theatre at at hospital in Burma serving largely the Chinese National Army who were allies of the United States. Those were a defining 3 years of his life which he never forgot. He faithfully wrote his wife and small child Eddie every day. Upon his return to the United States in October, 1945, Harland and Fern settled in Silver Spring, Maryland where Harland built his own home and continued in the electrician business with his brother Charles. He and Fern were blessed with three boys, Edward, Ralph, and Melvin and then adopted two daughters, Sheryl and Terrie. Later they raised a grandson, Derrick. Harland was a lifetime member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and served as a deacon for many years. At the age of eighty-eight, Harland and Fern moved to Brush, Colorado to live with their children Ralph and Margaret as Fern had developed Alzheimers disease and he needed help. After her death two and a half years later he continued to live most of the time with them, often traveling back to visit his home in Maryland until the last three years of his life when ill health prevented it. He spent the last two months of his life in Hospice care at home with Ralph and Margaret McClure. He is survived by his brother Charles McClure; sister Hervietta Self ; sons Ralph McClure and Melvin McClure; daughters, Sherie Turturro, Terrie McClure and five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Internment will be in the Brush Cemetery beside his wife. A memorial service will be held at the Fort Morgan Seventh Day Adventist Church on 6th and Meeker Streets at 3pm, February 8, 2014.
