Evelyn M. Shimmin, 90, of Fort Morgan, died on January 19, 2014. Mrs. Shimmin was born Feb. 26, 1923 in Arthur County, Neb., to Orville D. and Lena (Kruger) Thompson. With three brothers, she grew up on the family ranch in the sand hills east of Arthur. After graduating from high school, she taught in a one-room school near Arthur and later attended Gamper Nursing School in Denver as a Nurse Cadet. She began her nursing career in Ogallala, Neb., but suspended it when she married Robert Shimmin of Fort Morgan on April 20, 1947 and moved to Fort Morgan. She and Robert lived on a farm south of town on Main Street for 58 years until his passing in 2005. Evelyn resumed her nursing career in the 1960's at the Ft. Morgan Community Hospital, which continued until she retired in 1988 after more than 25 years of service. As a nurse, Evelyn touched the lives of many people living in Morgan County. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church and the Hospital Auxiliary. Survivors include four children, Laverna M. Saunders of Moon Township, PA; Robert O. Shimmin (Janet) of Peoria, IL; Michael D. Shimmin (Gail) of Boulder, CO, and Leona R. McLamb (Jeff) of Scottsdale, AZ; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She leaves three brothers and sisters-in-law, Dean and Doris Thompson (Sutherland, NE); Don and Helen Thompson (Arthur, NE), and Jack and June Thompson of Loveland, CO. and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. Evelyn will be interred in Arthur County, Neb. The family plans to have a public memorial service at a future date to celebrate Evelyn's life with others.
