Florence Weitzel, 91, lifelong Ft. Morgan resident, passed away Sunday morning, April 10, 2016, at Valley View Villa in Ft. Morgan. She was born August 7, 1924, in Ft. Morgan, to Fred and Julia (Weimer) Ostwald.
Flossie graduated from Brush High School in 1942 and then attended business school in Denver. She met and married Raymond Weitzel on September 16, 1945, in Christ Congregational Church in Fort Morgan.
The Weitzel family farmed south of Ft. Morgan for many years. Flossie was employed as a home demonstration agent for the Morgan County REA, and she served as secretary to the RE-3 School Board. Later she worked in the Morgan County assessor's office, and was elected to three terms as Morgan County Assessor. Flossie always had a deep interest in politics and was very active in the Democratic Party. After retirement she worked with the Girl Scouts.
She loved to travel, and with Ray made visits to California, the Grand Canyon, Glacier National Park, Washington DC, and Pennsylvania. She enjoyed camping with her family on the Grand Mesa, at Flaming Gorge, and many other places in the Colorado mountains. Flossie visited family and friends around the country- Texas, Montana, Nebraska, Wyoming, and others.
Survivors include her two sons, Alan (wife Joyce) Weitzel of Corrales, NM, Craig (wife Karen) Weitzel of Ft. Morgan, six grandchildren- Brett Weitzel (fiancee' Laura Probst) of Seattle,WA., Ashley Weitzel (husband Steev Wilson) of Carbondale, CO., Chelsea Weitzel of Denver, CO., Cody (wife Jackie) Weitzel of Denver, CO., Jason (wife Chrissy) Roberts of Fort Morgan, and Carrie (husband Eric) Klem of Briggsdale, CO. Great grandchildren include Adelaide and Bridget (Cody and Jackie), Emma & Molly (Jason and Chrissy), Abree, Tavin, Macie and Kahl (Carrie and Eric), and her sister Eleanor Painter of Billings Mont.
She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter Joan Roberts, two sisters Elsie Watley and MaryAnn Pollock, and her parents Fred and Julia Ostwald.
Funeral services will be held Friday April 22, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at the Christ Congregational Church in Ft. Morgan where Flossie was a lifetime member. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens. Friends who wish may make memorial gifts to Fort Morgan Heritage Foundation.
