Obituary

Franklin "Frank" Mercer 93 longtime Brush resident died Monday, February 12, 2007 at the Valley View Villa Care Center in Ft. Morgan. He was born May 10, 1913 in Vinita, Oklahoma to Ivan H. and Bessie (Franklin) Mercer. He graduated from high school in Trinidad, Colorado in 1931 and received his teaching degree from the Colorado State College of Education in 1938. Frank married Katherine Crowder on July 21, 1939 in Greeley, Colorado. Frank taught in Joes, Colorado for a time and then moved to Brush in 1944 and taught high school science and physics until his retirement in 1977. He then substitute taught until 2004. Mercer was a member of the United Methodist Church in Brush and through his varied interests and hobbies he touched many lives and received numerous awards. He was a musician and in his later years would take his keyboard to various functions and play and sing at area nursing homes. He was a ham radio operator, lifeguard, school bus driver, hobby shop owner, time keeper and announcer. Frank received an award from CHSAA for announcing Brush Beetdigger home football games for 57 straight years, which is a national record. The press box at Beetdigger Stadium was also renamed the The Frank Mercer Press Box. He was winner of the Community Service Award given by the Morgan County Board of Realtors, Outstanding Community Service Award given by the Colorado Athletic Directors Association, and received the HDR award from the Beetdigger Booster Club for all his years of support of high school athletics. He and his wife Katherine were named Outstanding Pioneers during Forth of July festivities in Brush. Survivors include three sons, Larry Mercer and Fred Mercer both of Brush and Steve Mercer of Chatsworth, California, one daughter, Carol Herbst of Ft. Morgan, ten grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Kathy and his brother, Ivan Mercer II. Memorial Services will be Saturday, February 17, 2007 at 10:30AM at the United Methodist Church in Brush. Friends who wish may make memorials to the Frank Mercer Memorial Scholarship Fund established at the Bank of Colorado in Brush. The Heer Mortuary and Crematory is in charge of the cremation arrangements.
