Gene
Carwin
Aug 12, 1941 — Feb 9, 2022
Fort Morgan
Gene Filmore Carwin, 80, of Fort Morgan, Colorado, entered eternal life surrounded by his loving family on February 9, 2022. Gene was born on August 12, 1941, in Sterling, Colorado, to Pauline (Japp) and Donald "Bum" Carwin. Gene grew up on a family farm in Proctor, Colorado, always thinking he was the middle of seven children, only to find out later he was actually one of nine children. Meeting his two eldest brothers late in life was a special blessing. Gene graduated a Mighty Mallard from Crook High School in 1959, and then went on to play football at NJC, graduating with an Associates of Arts degree.
Gene married his high school sweetheart Lyla Ring Carwin on September 28, 1961. When asked what his greatest accomplishment was, his response was his marriage of 60 years and four children. They enjoyed bowling and playing cards with their many family and friends.
Gene started Bob's Upholstery in Fort Morgan in 1963. One of his favorite phrases was that he "spent his whole life recovering." He was an accomplished and admired businessman for almost 60 years prior to retiring in December of 2021. Gene earned a reputation for his quality workmanship, integrity, and warm personality.
In his early years, Gene loved to spend time racing his dragster and quarter midget cars with LaJean and Greg. He went on to race his favorite Twin Turbo Chevy pickup with his Rat Crew friends. Gene's hobbies included spending time boating, fishing, camping, and hunting. His greatest joy was time with his family and being the biggest cheerleader for his families' various activities.
Gene is survived by his wife, Lyla; four children: LaJean (Mark) Hertel of Colorado Springs, Greg (Deb) Carwin of Fort Morgan, Jaylene (Eric) Kunze of Broomfield, and James (Kelly Rasmussen) Carwin of Fort Morgan, 13 Grandchildren, which were the light of his life: Stefanie Dailey, Stacie (Anthony) Procaccini, Kelli (Cody) Klingenberg, Kevin (Shelby) Hertel, Lindsey (Nathan) Wood, Ben (Melissa) Paulsen, Jordan Carwin, Dylan Paulsen, Rachel Carwin, Peyton and Cooper Kunze, and Kristopher and Lemmy Carwin, 9 great grandchildren: Bentley and Kingston Dailey, Ruby Gene Waters, Brody and Zoey Hertel, Odin Klingenberg, Anastasia and Victoria Paulsen, and Zaiden Wood. He is also survived by seven siblings Ted (Betty) Roos, Ken Jacobson, Loren "Spike" Carwin, Donna Dorsey, Gary (Betty Jo) Carwin, Bonnie Carwin and Randy (Terry) Carwin along with several beloved nieces, nephews, numerous cherished friends, and his daily coffee crew.
Gene was proceeded in death by his parents, brother Merle "Dutch" Carwin, his in-laws Ruth and Lyle Ring, brothers-in-law Norman Ring and Pat Dorsey, and sisters-in-law Annette and Rebecca "Kae" Carwin.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests financial support for Gene's grandson Kristopher Carwin, who was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy to support upcoming medical needs. Donations in Gene's memory can be done online at UgiftABLE.com with Ugift code E9L-41N or by sending a personal check to the family payable to Ugift - Colorado ABLE and include Kristopher Carwin in your check's memo field.
Services will be held Thursday, February 17, 2022, at Life Fellowship Church (17723 CR 20, Ft. Morgan) at 10:00 am. There will be a luncheon immediately following the service.
The family would like to thank the staff, nurses, and doctors at East Morgan County Hospital in Brush, CO, for their kindness and amazing care of Gene in his final days.
