George Slegl Cook, 91, passed away Thursday, March 10, 2011, at the Colorado Plains Medical Center following a short illness. He was born March 13, 1918, in Omaha, NE, to Albert & Elizabeth Slegl. He was taken in at a young age by George & Mary Cook of Goodrich, CO and later adopted by them. In 1937, George graduated from Hillrose High School. George served in the US Army during WWII in the third Armored Division landing on Omaha Beach in 1944. He served in six major battle locations which included the Battle of the Bulge, Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central German. They crossed the Siegfried Line in September, 1944, capturing the first town of Rolgrim. His Division was the first to liberate the infamous concentration camp of Nordhausen. After the war, George returned to the Cook Brothers Ranch in Goodrich. He married Thelma Irene Hunter on June 19, 1955. The couple farmed and ranched in the Goodrich area. George enjoyed music, camping, gardening and traveling south to Texas in the winter to avoid the cold and snow. Survivors include his nephews, John Samples of Brush, Edward Cook of Denver City, TX, Jerry Johnson of Mobile, AL; nieces Gloria McBrayer, Janice Ford, Nancy Nixon, Jackie Middleton, Rosanne Odin, and Jonette McConal all of Denver City, TX; Mary Foxx of Florida, Wilma Jones of Tulsa, OK, and Frances Taylor of Lincoln. NE. He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma; parents, George & Mary Cook, brothers, Ed & James Cook, sisters, Caroline Samples, Harriett Johnson and Minnie Alexander, and nephew Bob Samples. An inurnment memorial service will be held later at Serenity Falls Columbarium in Fort Morgan at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Weldon Valley Presbyterian Church or to a charity of choice.
