Gerald was born on March 30, 1933 at the McFarland home northwest of Ft. Morgan. He died at this home Monday January 15, 2007. Gerald is survived by his wife Janice E. McFarland, three daughters and families: Sharon and Rex Fiscus of New Raymer, Rose and Barry Anderson of Ft. Morgan, Mary and Leroy Dilka Jr. of Wiggins, Grandchildren: Brady and Tara (Kroskob) Dilka of Wiggins, Codie Dilka of Grand Junction, Korrie Dilka of Wiggins, Jessica Fiscus of New Raymer, Christopher, Derek and Ashley Anderson of Ft. Morgan, His sisters: Esther Weimer of Ft. Morgan, Dorothy Ruby of Spokane, WA, Vera Hallgarth of Spokane, WA and Edna Winn of Denver, his brothers: Charles (Chuck), and Tom both of Ft. Morgan, Ron of New Castle, and his mother-in-law Mrs. Olga Ruby. He was preceded in death by his parents Dean and Gertrude (Westhoff) McFarland, one brother Vernon (Mac) and one granddaughter Kayla Fiscus. He Graduated from Fort Morgan High School with the class of 1952. He farmed a year with his brother then was inducted into the Army on May 5, 1953 with the Company C 826 Combat Engineers during the Korean Conflict. He spent most of his service at Sagalac Bay, Greenland. He was honorably discharged May 3, 1955 with honors: Silver Star, National Defense medal, and Good Conduct metal. After the military service he worked at East Lake, CO doing land leveling for CKC Construction in the Thornton and Northglenn areas. On June 3, 1961 he married Janice Elaine Ruby at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Brush. He continued to work in East Lake until 1964. They moved to the Brush and Ft. Morgan areas where he had a number of jobs including farming, as a mechanic, and at the time of his retirement he was a self employed carpenter. At the time of his death he was a member of the Saint Helena Catholic Church, a life member of the American Legion Post 76 and a life member of the NRA. He enjoyed dry fly fishing on the Pouder River, hunting, and riding his bicycle. Gerald enjoyed spending his free time doing volunteer work for his fellow veterans. He made lap blankets for disabled veterans and wooden flag cases to display folded flags. He also enjoyed educating children on gun safety. He loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and friends. A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 10:30 am at the Saint Helena Catholic Church in Ft. Morgan with the American legion post 76 will be conducting military honors. A private inurnment will be held in the Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, at a later time. Friends who wish may make memorial donations in Geralds name care of the mortuary. The Heer & Jolliffe Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.
