Gloria J. Winstead, 95, passed away Monday, December 23, 2019, at the Hillcrest Care Center and The Towers in Wray, CO.  She was born February 10, 1924, in Jacksonville, FL to Byrd & Mable V. (Hawkins) Green.

Being the daughter of a US Navy family, Gloria moved many times during her childhood.  She married Kermit Winstead on June 15, 1947, in Mountain View, CA.  In 1953 the Winstead family moved to Brush.  Kermit passed away on August 2, 1995.

Gloria enjoyed dancing and was a very good roller skater.  She loved to sew.  It's been said that Gloria could make something out of nothing.  She was known as a "Dolly Doctor", and was very proud of the fact that she attended the Doll Hospital School through Lifetime Career School, a home study class, and received her degree in 1982.  There wasn't a doll that she couldn't fix and make "new" again.  She had an extensive doll collection of her own.  Gloria & Kermit enjoyed attending the doll shows on the front range.  She always managed to win herself another doll or two.  She also loved to make teddy bears, even making them from mink with leather paws.  When she wasn't sewing, Gloria would be out and about checking yard sales, and her fondest shopping place was what she called "Suds and Duds".  She also had a green thumb and loved raising violets and house plants.  As time marched on, and Dementia of the Alzheimer's Type raised its ugly head, Gloria became a resident of the Aladdin Assisted Living Center in Brush and later transferred to the Hillcrest Care Center in Wray, where she has lived since February, 2012.

Gloria was a Cub Scout den mother, a member of the Keebler Doll Club, B.P.O.E., and worked many years for the Munns Addition Lateral Ditch and Water Sanitation District.  She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her daughter Ida (David) Mathies of Yuma, CO; her son, Hurchell (Rhonda) Winstead of Fort Morgan, CO; 4 grandchildren, Arlen, Christine, Jennifer, and Jessica; 8 great grandchildren, Ian Dennis, (Alcia Meyer), Reid (Brooke) Buster, Westin and Eastin Mathies, Kamryn and Kaylee White, Caleb and Jacob Harding;  and 2 great – great grandchildren Clara and Rosalie Buster.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, 2 sisters, 2 brothers, sisters & brothers-in-law, her parents and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, January 4, 2020, at the Heer Mortuary Chapel in Brush at 2:00 PM.  The service will conclude at the Mortuary.  Private inurnment service will be in the Brush Memorial Cemetery.
