Harland Kerr "H.K." Schug, Jr., age 97, passed away in Ft. Morgan, CO, on July 12, 2023. Born in 1925 in Tonkawa, OK, H.K. graduated with a degree from Oklahoma State University. He served honorably in the US Navy as a machinist during WWII and was notably on one of the first flight crews into Hiroshima, Japan, after the atomic bombing.
H.K. was a long-time resident of Ft. Morgan, where he served as an officer at Farmers State and United Banks,and was a civic leader in many local leadership groups. He led several projects, including Howdy Days. In his leisure time, he was an avid golfer and fisherman.
H.K. is survived by his wife of 49 years, Melbalee Schug and three daughters: Kim (Con) Schaefer; Sherry (David) Beaver; and Sara (Gary) Sloan. He is predeceased by a son, Harland "Kerr" Schug III, and a daughter, Connie McGraw. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren: Ashley Weimer; Segrid (Christopher) Licata; Conrad Schaefer; Cody Sloan; Casey (Megan) Sloan; Chad (Allie) Sloan; Charla Dury; Colin McGraw; Gracie (Stephen) Kairis; and his fifteen great-grandchildren.
H.K. will always be cherished and remembered by his family for his sharp mind, sense of humor, and compassionate heart.
Those who wish may make donations in Harland's name to Hospice of the Plains, 100 Broadway St. Ste 1A, Sterling, CO 80751.
There will be no services held at Harland's request.
