Harold F. Aikens, 68, of New Raymer, died Saturday, October 20, 2007 at the Colorado Plains Medical Center in Ft. Morgan. He was born January 28, 1939 in Detroit, Michigan to Harold and Jessie (Marshall) Aikens. Harold worked with his dad and brothers in the family logging business in Michigan. He met Effie Papple in Mitchell, Nebraska and was married to her from 1960 until 1982. Later in his life he worked in an upholstery shop and in a mattress factory. They later moved to Kimball, Nebraska where he worked in the oil and gas fields for several years. He married Janet Bellis on May 16, 1983. They lived in New Raymer and he continued working in the oil fields until he was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis forcing him to retire in August of 1998. Harold enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening with his wife Janet. He also enjoyed watching the garden grow and then being able to share the harvest with his friends and neighbors. His plan was to make a bigger garden next summer, especially the sweet corn. Harold is survived by his wife Janet of 24 years of New Raymer, their son Brian Aikens of New Raymer, his sons, Joe Aikens and wife Deb of Sydney, NE and Fred Aikens of Mitchell, NE, two daughters, Bonnie Stolen and husband Jim of Scottsbluff, NE and Ruth Knicely and husband Paul of Kimbell, NE, three step-children, Julie Clark and husband Bryan of Las Animas, CO, Jamie Calder and husband Billy of Alamosa, CO and Jerry Bellis and wife Christy of Camden Point, MO, six sisters, Elizabeth "Lidy" Spychowski and husband Raymond of Pinconning, MI, Patricia Matherly and husband Jack of Murphysboro, IL, Doris Elder of Mio, MI, Pauline Hunt and Edith Elder both of Brunswick, GA and Jessie Aikens of Bay City, MI, one brother, Arthur Aikens and wife Sandy of Bay City, MI, fifteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers, Leroy, Earl and Joseph Aikens, Bill Brimmer and Bob and Gene Morton. Memorial Services will be Thursday, October 25, 2007 at 10:30 AM at the New Raymer Baptist Church in New Raymer, CO. Interment will follow in New Raymer Cemetery. Friends who wish may make memorial gifts in Harold's name in care of the Heer & Jolliffe Mortuary in Ft. Morgan.
