Harold Y. "Harry" Hunt, 88, lifelong area resident, died Friday, April 6, 2012 at the Eben-Ezer Lutheran Care Center in Brush. He was born June 29, 1923 in Brighton, Colorado to Herbert and Franc (Schaal) Hunt. Soon after his birth the family moved to Ft. Morgan, Colorado where the family was raised. Harry graduated from Ft. Morgan High School and soon after, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served in the submarine service from 1942-1945 aboard the USS Tautog and the USS Sterlet in the South Pacific during the war. At the time of the bombing of Hiroshima his submarine was operating off the coast of Japan. After his discharge from active duty, he returned to Ft. Morgan and married Betty Yenne on June 7. 1946. They had two children, Larry Keith and Llova Lynn, now of Centennial, Colorado. His business years were spent in the meat and grocery business. Harry and Bernard Goecker purchased the old Tieman Grocery from owners Leonard Johnson and John Dahms in the early 1960's. When Bernard retired in 1974, Harry took in his brother-in-law, Herb Yenne as a partner and together, they operated the store until the early nineties when they sold the store to Perk O'Dell of Akron, Colorado. Harry was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ft. Morgan and was a life member of the Elks. He was also a member of the local VFW and a member of the WWII Submarine Veterans Association. After his retirement, he and Betty spent several winters in Arizona where they enjoyed golfing and spending time with friends, as well as traveling. Harry is survived by Betty, his wife of 65 years, one son Larry Hunt and wife Idette of Centennial and their son Bryan also of Centennial, one daughter, Llova Hickman and her husband Gordon of Centennial and their two daughters, Lisa Williams, and husband Martin of Firestone and their son Alexander and Lori Lam and husband Johnny also of Firestone and their daughter Abigail. He is also survived by his sister Catherine Brandon of Omaha, Nebraska and several nieces and nephews. Harry was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Lloyd, Richard, and William Hunt. Private Graveside Inurnment Services at Serenity Falls Columbarium will be held at a later date. Morgan is in charge of the cremation arrangements.
