From 1918-1926 she went to a country school. In 1930 she was graduated at Richland High School. Helen finished college at Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa, in 1934 and began a career in teaching.

Next, she worked at the Denver Dry Goods Company while teaching second grade in Lakewood, Colorado. Another teaching job moved her to La Junta, Colorado, where she taught departmental fourth through sixth grades for six years.

After her father's death, she and her mother moved to Fort Morgan to be near Helen's older sister Elizabeth and family. Elizabeth's son, John E. Green, was a florist in Fort Morgan but died at the age of 55.
