Obituary

Helen I. Weimer, 91, longtime Morgan County resident, passed away Sunday, January 3, 2021, at the Eben Ezer Lutheran Care Center in Brush.  She was born May 16, 1929, in Pawnee, Colorado to Joseph M. Gehrig Jr. & Nettie Gehrig.

The Gehrig family homesteaded north of Akron in the early 1870's and later moved to a farm on the South Platte River near Pawnee, CO.  As a girl, she would have opportunities to see movies with her favorite actor, Tom Mix, setting in motion her love for the West.

Helen graduated from high school in Denver.  On December 26, 1948, she married David R. Weimer in Walsenburg, CO.  They lived on a farm west of Fort Morgan for many years and the family still owns & operates that farm today.  Helen served as a rural mail carrier for over 15 years for the US Postal Service in Fort Morgan.  She was especially fond of the southwest and its history.  She loved traveling, gardening, reading Zane Grey books, the desert country, music, dancing, antique collecting, and chasing after steam locomotives with her husband.

Survivors include her children, Kathryn & John Wagner of Fort Morgan and Jonathon Weimer of Walla Walla, WA; 10 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and her sister Mary Josephine Schimpf of the Denver area.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, January 7, 2021, at 10:30 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Brush.  Interment will follow in the Brush Memorial Cemetery.  A rosary will be recited Wednesday, January 6, at 4:00 PM at the Heer Mortuary Chapel in Brush.  With the current pandemic guidelines, please social distance and wear whatever personal protective equipment you are most comfortable wearing.
