Helen Ann Wood passed away in the presence of her family on February 19, 2011 in her room at Eben Ezer in Brush about 200 feet from the site of the old Elim Hospital where she was born October 3, 1930 to Chris and Helen Danielsen of Brush. Helen was a life long resident of Morgan County. She died of complications following a long battle with Parkinson's disease. Helen was raised in Brush, attending the Morey School and the Brush High School, where she graduated in 1948. During her high school years, she worked as a Nurses Aide at the Elim Hospital. In September of 1947 she met a young man recovering from a motorcycle accident and with a pinch - she made the decision not to attend Dana College in Blair, Nebraska. On January 2, 1949 she married Donald C. "Buck" Wood. Family lore states that their marriage is said to have brought forth the Blizzard of 1949. After raising 4 children, she returned to school. Helen attended Northeastern Junior College and, after graduating with Honors in 1966, became a Licensed Practical Nurse. From that point on, Helen worked at the Fort Morgan Community Hospital, in every area from ICU to the geriatrics wing. She finished her career there as the Patient Advocate. In 1994, Helen was awarded the Plains Nursing Award for outstanding service, an unmistakable tribute to the number of lives she has touched. Helen was the founder of the HOSPES of Morgan County in 1982 and served on the board and as the Board of Directors Chairman for many years. She also served Caring Ministries, Morgan County's Adult Protection Team and on many other boards and committees in the community. She had a life long association with Eben Ezer, eventually serving on the Board of Directors. Helen was also a charter member of the Lutheran Church of our Redeemer, where she taught Sunday school and confirmation classes, served on the Church Council and was active in the Lutheran Church Women. Helen is survived by her husband of 62 years, Donald C. "Buck" Wood of Fort Morgan. She is also survived by her children, David Wood, Ft. Morgan, Diane Nicklas and Randy, Fort Morgan. Donald and Kathy Wood, Weldona, Julie Vannoy and Doug, Fort Morgan. Also, her daughter at heart, Charlene Wells and David and family of Greeley. She has 13 Grandchildren, Daniel and Mikki Wood, Anna-Marie Wood, Kris and Kenny May, Jenn and Ty Tatham, Jeff and Helen Norris, Bobbi and Keven Heitschmidt, Buffi Elliot, Becky Edson, Connor Wood, Kirsten Wood, Ben and Lisa Vannoy, Abbey Vannoy, Caitlin Vannoy, and 9 Great Grandchildren, Morgan, Dante, Claire, Kyler, Tommy, Taylor, Trae, Caden and Jesse. She is also survived by one sister Betty Jean Danielsen of San Jose, California and two brothers Robert and Raymond Danielsen both of Brush. There are uncounted cousins, nieces and nephews and extended family. She was proceeded in death by her parents, two grandchildren, Beth Ann Wood and Bradley Lumpkin, and her sisters Mary Lou Danielsen and Donna Jean Rock. Memorial services will be held at the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, in Fort Morgan on Thursday the 24th of February at 11 AM. Services will conclude at the Church. Memorial gifts may be given to the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, Fort Morgan or to Eben Ezer Lutheran Care Center in Brush.
