Herbert "Short" Fries, 89, lifelong Brush area resident, died Thursday evening at the East Morgan County Hospital in Brush. He was born August 14, 1921 in Brush to John A. and Ella Fries. Herbert joined the Unites States Marine Corps on his birthday in 1942, serving during WWII in Iwo Jima, Saipan, and Tinian. He received The Purple Heart. He returned to Brush where he ranched and was also a business owner. He married Glenda Ford on November 17, 1973 in Ft. Morgan. After retiring, he worked as a groundskeeper at the Bunker Hill Country Club. He was an avid bowler and golfer. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge in Ft. Morgan and the American Legion and an honorary life member of the Bunker Hill Country Club. He is survived by his wife, Glenda of Brush; one daughter, Diana Swopes of Cheyenne, WY; one son, Rod Fries of Sidney, NE; two step-sons, Michael Terry of Ft. Morgan and James Terry of San Ramon, CA; 4 granddaughters, 6 great grandchildren and 1 great- great grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Raymond Fries and Elmore Fries, and one sister, Inez Bell. At his request there will be no services held at this time.
