Jane (Gilmore) Van Dyke, longtime resident of Brush, died Friday, February 24, 2012, at the Eben Ezer Lutheran Care Center in Brush. Known by many local residents as "their high school teacher and / or counselor", she was 94 years old. Mrs. Van Dyke, who graduated from Colorado A&M , married William Dean Van Dyke, another "Aggie" from Ovid, Colorado on June 26, 1937. Soon after daughter Peggy was born (October 25, 1941), Jane began her teaching career in Fairplay, Colorado. Son Robert joined the family (November 28, 1945), while still living in Fairplay. When Dean's job with Public Service moved the family to Sterling, Colorado, Jane continued teaching both lower and upper grades in various schools. Although Jane's school-teaching spanned approximately 45 years, she always said that her favorite place to teach began in 1953 when the family moved to Brush! Mrs. Van Dyke taught at Brush for 28 years before retiring and becoming a world traveler. Born December 23, 1917 in Carrollton, Missouri to E. Irwin Gilmore and Marjorie (Sinsabaugh) Gilmore, Jane grew up spending much of her time in her father's study. As a result, Jane became a student who loved school. Upon moving to Adams City, Colorado, Jane began to demonstrate that love, and eventually graduated from A&M at the age of 17. Jane obtained her Master Degree in 1964. Jane continued attending school in Greeley, but stopped short of earning her Doctorate when she decided that she did not want her family and friends referring to her as Dr. Van Dyke! Always helping others to obtain the best quality education possible, Jane was responsible for the awarding of many scholastic honors and scholarships at Brush High School. Striving to be the best at what she did, Jane won many awards including the Colorado Counselor of the Year Trophy in 1974. She was the first woman to be awarded this honor by the Colorado Personnel and Guidance Association! Jane was a member and an Elder at Rankin Presbyterian Church, a member of P.E.O., Eastern Star, Delta Kappa Gamma, Brush Music Club, Morgan County C.S.U. Alumni, Morgan County Republican Women's Club, and East Morgan Hospital Auxiliary. Jane is survived by her two married children, eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. Jane is preceded in death by her husband, who died October 18, 1972, her parents, and her three sibling brothers. A funeral service will be held Thursday, March 1, 2012 at 2:00 pm at the Rankin Presbyterian Church in Brush. Immediately following the service, a reception will be held at the Activity Center at Eben Ezer Lutheran Care Center. Preceding the service, the interment will be at 11:00 am in the Brush Memorial Cemetery. Friends who wish may make memorial gifts to either the Brush High School Scholarship Fund or to the Rankin Presbyterian Church in Brush.
