Obituary

Jane Taylor Wagers, 104, longtime Brush area resident, died January 20 in Colorado Springs.  She was born in Springer, New Mexico, on December 22, 1913 to L. I. & Milly Taylor. Growing up on the family ranch, she enjoyed periodic trips to Santa Fe, where her father served in the New Mexico state legislature.

Mrs. Wagers attended the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque as a music major and moved to Los Angeles in 1935. On November 3, 1940, she married Brush-born Jack Wagers and lived in the Brush area since 1945.

She studied education at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley and taught special education students in Ft. Morgan. In the mid-1970s, she served as director of the STAR school for developmentally-disabled students in Ft. Morgan and oversaw the construction and start-up of a sheltered workshop providing vocational training and employment for teens from a six-county area.

Mrs. Wagers enjoyed travel and made a trip to China soon after it normalized relations with the West. Never without a book, she especially enjoyed history and mystery novels.

She was an avid sportswoman who loved fishing and, in season, opened her property to local hunters.   An accomplished golfer, she competed often in local tournaments and, as a senior, placed first in her handicap class at the prestigious Broadmoor Invitational. She also played duplicate bridge, earning master points in several state and regional tournaments.

Mrs. Wagers is survived by her sons David Wagers of Brush, Jan Wagers of Colorado Springs, and Ken Wagers of Los Angeles, as well as six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Family members will hold a small memorial service at a later date. Friends who wish may make a memorial gift to the East Morgan County Library.
