Obituary

JEFFREY DAVID MICKEY, 44, of Brush, died Friday morning, June 19, 2009 at the Denver Health Medical Center in Denver after a sudden illness. He was born in Phoenix, AZ on May 2, 1965 to Joseph & Marianne (Toth) Mickey. He graduated from Loveland High School in 1983. Jeff moved to the Fort Morgan/Brush area in 1989. Jeff married Carolyn Mae Kembel on August 11, 1990 in Fort Morgan. He worked at Safeway, Brush Grocery Kart, and then was a teacher/administrator at Riverview Christian School. He had also worked at Ackley Building Center in Brush while returning to school to finish his education. Jeff achieved his lifelong dream when graduating with his BA in Elementary Education from Colorado Christian University in 2008. He loved teaching 3rd grade at Beaver Elementary School in Brush this past school year. His joy in life was spending time with his wife and children and his goal was to be their hero. Jeff took advantage of every opportunity to teach others and share his faith. He was a youth leader for 17 years at First Christian Church in Fort Morgan. In addition, he served in many leadership positions at his church and was currently serving as an elder. Jeff coached a variety of youth sports over the past twenty years including baseball, football, basketball and swimming. He was not only a coach, but a mentor and friend. He was also very involved as a member of the Brush Lion's Club, holding many offices and volunteering his time for their community service projects. Jeff enjoyed many years as a high school and middle school football official and as an umpire for slow-pitch softball & baseball. He loved playing golf, softball, camping at the lake and attending local sporting events. Survivors include his wife Carolyn and their two sons, Ben and Alec, all of Brush; his parents, Joseph & Marianne Mickey of Brush; his sister, Beth Golden and her husband Jim of Littleton, CO; his brother, Jon Mickey and his wife Patti of The Woodlands, TX; his father and mother-in-law, Marvin & Bev Kembel of Fort Morgan; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Connie Tormohlen and her husband Terry, Don Kembel and his wife Sheri, and Matt Kembel and his wife MacKenzie, all of Fort Morgan; and Cindy Tormohlen and her husband Marc, and Chris Babcock and Martin Ley, all of Brush. Jeff is also survived by many loved nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and countless friends. There will be an opportunity for friends to pay their respects by signing Jeff's casket on Wednesday, June 24th from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Heer & Dahl Mortuary in Brush. A celebration of Jeff's life will be held on Thursday, June 25th at 10:00 a.m. in the Brush High School Gymnasium. Memorial donations may be made to the First Christian Church in Fort Morgan, the City of Brush Recreation Department-Prairie Trails Park, or the Ben and Alec Mickey Education Fund at the Bank of Colorado in Brush. The Heer & Dahl Mortuary & Crematory in Brush is in charge of the service and cremation arrangements.
