Jerry Dwayne Eklund

Jerry “Dwayne” Eklund of Brush, Colorado passed away peacefully at home alongside his loving family on September 16, 2026. He was born on May 27, 1943, in Slaton, Texas to Erik and Pauline Eklund. Dwayne moved to Colorado at the age of 11 where the family farmed and raised Suffolk sheep.

Dwayne graduated from Sangre de Cristo High School in 1961 and attended Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. In November of 1965, Dwayne met the love of his life, Martha “Marty” Horning. They married in April of 1966 and spent over 60 wonderful years together building a life and family first in Alamosa, Colorado and then later, after buying land, they began farming in Mosca, Colorado. While farming, Dwayne began working at the Alamosa Public Service Power Plant for several years before accepting a transfer to Pawnee Power Plant in Brush in 1982 as a Shift Operator/Supervisor. In 1983, the family moved to Snyder, Colorado before finally settling in Brush in 1989.

Dwayne committed his life to Christ, accepting the free gift of salvation shortly after he and Marty married. A member of Snyder Bible Church, Dwayne loved the Lord and enjoyed fellowshipping with other believers. He desired all to have a relationship with His Heavenly Father and often asked others, “Do you know where you will spend eternity?”

Dwayne was incredibly knowledgeable and diversely talented in many roles. He was a school bus mechanic, a truck driver, a farmer, a land-leveling business owner, and a volunteer fire fighter on the Mosca-Hooper Volunteer Fire Department – but no other job or hobby meant more to him than flying. As a boy, he was in awe of watching planes and flew for the first time when he was a teenager. By the time Dwayne was in his mid-20’s he already had his private pilot’s license and would go on to own a Aeronca Champ and Piper Cub. He was an active member of Civil Air Patrol for over 20 years serving as a Captain and helping with searching for downed aircraft and other critical assignments.

He loved his family deeply and possessed an ornery and mischievous spirit. He laughed easily, would help anyone who asked and took pride in his white 1966 Chevrolet C20 pick-up.

Dwayne is survived by his loving wife Marty of Brush, son Darrell (Nicole) Eklund of Snyder; daughter, Paula (Rod) Nestor of Georgia and Cynda (Pat) Walter of Oklahoma; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grand children and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Paul “Dennis” Eklund, his father Erik Eklund and mother, Pauline Eklund.

Dwayne loved pancakes, so to honor him, there will be a pancake breakfast on Wednesday, September 23rd at Snyder Bible Church at 8:30 am with his funeral service following at the church at 10:00 am. Internment at the Brush Cemetery will be immediately following.
