Joan Edna (Kurz) Mayberry entered life triumphant on June 21, 2023. Born in Scribner, NE on April 11, 1937 to her parents Herbert  and Edna Kurz. She was the second of three children. After high school graduation she became a teacher and taught elementary school for 2 years at a one room school house. Joan met the love of her life Charles Mayberry and they were married on June 1, 1955. Charles was also a teacher and the two of them moved to Colorado in the early 1960's. after their third child was born in NE.

After moving to CO Joan worked as a homemaker taking care of all five of her children. Mike, Mark, Tom, Mary and Tim kept her busy by providing for their needs while Charles worked in the Fort Morgan School district. She was also very active in the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, in which she participated in the many women's ministries events such as sewing and quilt making, providing meals and dishes for those in need and church functions. She made many friends and enjoyed their company. She is remembered for having cookies in the cookie jar ready for everyone to come home to after school.

After Charles retired from education in 1987 they moved to Grand Junction, CO. She loved the mountains and they enjoyed traveling with a "popup" camper and traveled all over the mountains of CO and Utah. They also enjoyed visiting their children and grandchildren in places like Gurnee, IL, Portland, OR Nashville, TN, and Windermere, FL. They also made trips to Alaska, Hawaii, and Great Britain.

They made one more major move in 1998 to Pueblo West, CO. It was here that they helped plant a Methodist Church that began in an elementary school and spent some time in a funeral home before building SonRise church. It was a wonderful time of faith growth and fulfillment. Joan loved to play card games and dominoes with her grandchildren, family and friends. She also loved putting jigsaw puzzles together, reading novels, and her tablet in which she checked Facebook several times a day.

After Charles died in February 2014, Joan moved to Brush CO. She made many friends at Rankin Presbyterian Church and in her condo association. Joan is survived by her brother Gene (Eunice) Kurz. Her five children, Mike (Vicki), Mark (Patty), Tom (Martha), Mary Gross (Mike) and Tim (Corina).  Her pride and joy were her grandchildren Amy, Kristina, Amanda (David), Kody (Brooke), Aaron (Britani), David, Hunter (Grace), Danielle (Patrick), Kira, Chris, Elizabeth and the extra special great-grandchildren,  Abaline, Caylee and Kayson. She is also survived by numerous extended family.  She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Sandra Horst, and the light of her life, husband Charles.

A Memorial service will be held Saturday, July 1st at Rankin Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m..

Memorials will be received on behalf of Rankin Presbyterian Church and the American Diabetes Association in which she survived for 60 years as a type I diabetic.

Inurnment will be with her husband at a future date in Scribner, NE.
