Obituary

Joann Virginia Mahaney O'Neill passed November 3rd, 2024 in Independence, Missouri.  She was born on September the 8th, 1941 to Joseph Kent Mahaney and Annie Virginia Purvis Mahaney in Pueblo Colorado.  She graduated from Pueblo Central High School in 1959 and four years later received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the University of Colorado, Boulder. While at the university she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority.

Joann married William O'Neill in 1963.They had three boys, Michael, Patrick and Sean.  Bill and Joann ran O'Neill & Sons Lumber Yard in Fort Morgan. Following the divorce, Joann raised her sons and began a 25 year teaching career for the Wiggins school district, retiring in 2003.

Joann enjoyed playing bridge, and quilting and sewing in her "play room" as it was called. She was an avid reader and had been a member of several book clubs. She was a 50-year member of The Order of Eastern Star, and a longtime member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.  Joann was active, on the state level, with the Colorado Education Association, and president of the Wiggins Educational Association.

She is survived by her sons, Michael and wife Michelle of Lake Lotawana MO, Patrick and wife Stefanie of Fort Collins CO, and Sean and partner Patti of Great Falls MT. She is also survived by her granddaughter, Katherine and husband Joseph Delaney of Ault, CO, her brother Joseph and wife Betty Mahaney of Pueblo Colorado, and former husband and friend, William (Bill) O'Neill and partner Karen Osthus of Denver.

Her parents preceded her in death.

Interment will be in Los Animas, CO.
