John E. Longnecker, passed away at Valley View Villa in Fort Morgan on February 25th, 2012, on the eve of his 99th birthday. He was born in Newton, Iowa on February 26, 1913 to Hugh and Myrtle Longnecker. He attended school in Newton and graduated from Newton High School in 1931. Following graduation, he worked at the Newton YMCA for three years and then attended Taylor University at Upland, Indiana. He married Margaret McBride, of Newton, on July 2, 1938 at Lancaster, Missouri. They lived in Des Moines and then Davenport where he was employed in bowling alley management. An expert bowler, he was the Iowa State Bowling Singles Champion in 1934, and the Iowa State Open Division Champion in 1942. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Force, 44th Station Complement Squadron, 20th Fighter Group, 8th Air Force, at Kings Cliffe, Northamptonshire, England where he attained the rank of Technical Sergeant. Following the war, the family moved to San Juan, Texas where he served as the City Clerk. In 1953 the family relocated to Fort Morgan where he was employed by the City, and retired as City Clerk in 1976. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling and camping with his wife and annual fishing camps at Ranger Lakes, Colorado with the entire family. He is survived by wife, Margaret, son William (Donna) of Canyon, Texas; daughter Kathryn (Ray S. Christensen) of Fort Collins, Colorado; son John (Nancy) of Thornton, Colorado; 4 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Fort Morgan and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 11 AM at the United Methodist Church in Fort Morgan. The service will conclude at the church. A private inurnment will be at the Serenity Falls Columbarium.
