Col. John Hyatt Newell, 90, former Pueblo resident, died Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at Colorado Plains Medical Center in Fort Morgan. He was born December 1, 1922 in Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Denver to Hyatt & Madeline (Kelley) Newell. John joined the Army in 1945 and served in 3 wars before retiring from the Army in 1973. Throughout his time in the Army John accomplished American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic- Pacific Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Silver Star Medal w/First Bronze OLC, Breast Order Yun Hui of National China Presidential Unit Citation, Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), French Croix de Guerre. On June 22, 1980 he married Geraldine Short in Aurora after losing his first wife, Lois Freeman. John volunteered with Red Cross and enjoyed building things with his hands. Survivors include his wife Gerry Newell; sons, Kelley Newell of Pueblo, CO, and Wayne Fallis of Broomall, PA; daughters, Leslie Jackson of Denver, CO, and Yvonne Wolfram of Weldona, CO; two grandchildren and friends of Villa Pueblo. John was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Lois (Freeman) Newell. Graveside Services will be Friday October 11, 2013 at 1:00 PM at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver.
