LARRY GLENN BATES, 58, of Fort Morgan, died July 26, 2007 at Anschutz Trauma & Burn Center at the University of Colorado in Denver. Larry was born June 2, 1949 in Coffeyville, KS along side his twin brother Garry. They were the first set of twins born in this small town hospital. The twins were born to Irene & Albert Bates. Larry grew up in Coffeyville where he attended McKeenly Grade School for part of 1st grade. He then attended Liberty Kansas Elementary School for the remainder of 1st grade and 2nd grade. The family then moved to Wann, OK where attended school before graduating in 1967. Larry was drafted into the Army in 1968 where he served 2 years in Vietnam with the Military Police. Larry married Cheryl Ann Staab after returning from Vietnam on May 29, 1971 in Kimball, NE. They soon welcomed a baby boy on April 4, 1972, which they named Larry Glenn Bates II "Lil' Poopsie", named after his father, Larry "Big Poopsie" Bates. Two years later they welcomed daddy's little girl, Cassie Marie Bates on September 10, 1974. Two years later the Bates family moved to Fort Morgan, CO where Larry continued to be employed by Mercury Incorporated until he was laid off 7 years later. He started his own business called A & L Automotive, as a mechanic, which he continued doing until his passing. During this time he also worked part time for Kar Ltd. And he did metal recycling at his own place of business. Larry was known throughout Morgan County. He was a devoted friend to anyone who crossed his path. Larry enjoyed having coffee every morning at Home Plate where he would engage anyone in conversation. Larry was a devoted grandfather to his 5 grandchildren. He would allow them to tinker with him in his shop. They truly enjoyed their time with their grandfather and he enjoyed his time with them also. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Irene & Albert Bates and his sister, Audrey Bates-Daniels. Larry is survived his his wife Cheryl Bates, who resided with him in Fort Morgan; his son, Larry Bates and his daughter in law, Jenny Bates and their 3 daughters; Briana Bates, Cortnee Bates, and Tatum Bates of Fort Myers, FL; his daughter, Cassie Bates-Gray and her husband David Gray and their two sons; Derek Gray and Dylan Gray of Fort Morgan. He is also survived by his 4 brothers; Bert Bates of Kimball, NE, Jim Bates of Coffeyville, KS, Garry Bates, his twin brother, of Dickinson, ND, and Donald Bates of Kimball, NE, 3 sisters; Edna Bates-Doebel and Donna Bates-O'Daniel, both of South Coffeyville, OK, and Theda Bates-Muller of Wann, OK. A funeral service will be Tuesday, July 31, 2007 at 10:00 AM at Calvary Baptist Church in Fort Morgan. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens in Fort Morgan with Military Honors by V.F.W.
