Larry Lee Giauque

Larry Lee Giauque, 88, of Brush, Colorado passed away on August 7, 2026. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His kindness, compassion, and humor will be deeply missed.

Larry was born in Brush, Colorado on January 28th, 1938 to Clayton and Dorothy (Willis) Giauque, the oldest of three children. Following graduation from Brush High School (A Beetdigger fan forever!). He attended UC Boulder where he met the love of his life, Mary Lou (Clark) Giauque. They married the week following their college graduation in 1961 and began an amazing adventure following Larry’s Navy career.

Larry and Mary Lou built their lives and family via thirteen different naval duty stations over the course of twenty-one years including Hawaii, Guam, California, Washington, Texas, and Florida. Larry was a navy pilot during Vietnam who was deployed during the Pueblo Incident. Later he attended the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, California where he earned his Masters in Meteorology and Oceanography, becoming a naval meteorologist.

Keeping track of weather data was a passion of Larry’s which he brought home to Brush when he retired in 1982. He continued recording local weather and was a WeatherWatcher for Denver KCNC for many years. He also joined the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS) and collected data and community hail pads to deliver to the research station in Fort Collins. His children learned the names of clouds and are all weather buffs due to his love of weather.

Larry taught math at Brush High School from 1982-1984 and then became an instructor of science and math at Morgan Community College from 1984-2000. He was fascinated by numbers and would always announce when the car odometer reflected a numeric pattern. He had always wanted to be a teacher, and he became one of the best who sincerely cared for his students and created opportunities for their success.

On retirement from teaching, he and Mary Lou continued their world travels enjoying excursions with family and friends to visit grandchildren, and to see places like Alaska, the Caribbean, Europe and the Mediterranean. They especially enjoyed cruising and bus trips.

Larry felt strongly about giving to his community and accomplished this by serving on the Brush School Board, the Library Board and the East Morgan County Hospital Board. He was a Rotary member, Rotary President, and for many years editor of The Piñon News for the local Rotary club. He was a faithful member of Rankin Presbyterian Church and served as an elder for many years, as well as singing in the choir and supporting the church in a variety of ways.

Larry was an exceptional father and grandfather. He loved all of his family and treated each one with kindness, compassion, and respect. He appreciated the uniqueness of each of his children: Cindy (Mark) Fesgen of Colorado Springs, CO, Mike (Mary) Giauque of Camarillo, CA, Chris (Carla) Giauque of Ava, MO, Trish (Michael) Torrez of Fort Collins, CO. He was blessed with 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. When each grandchild turned 11, they were treated to an adventure of their choosing with Grandma and Grandpa and many wonderful memories were created. He taught his kids to explore the world and to be open to and appreciate the differences of people and places. He is survived by his brother Bill (Karen) Giauque of Ocala, Florida, as well as his wife and children. He was a devoted husband to Mary Lou and treasured every moment with her.

As Larry started slowing down, he found great pleasure in his morning coffee runs. He enjoyed early morning lattes at The Willow and then followed that by coffee with friends down at Home Plate II.

Larry lived his life as a true follower of Jesus. He walked in love and those who knew him respected him for his caring, his thoughtfulness, his intellect, and his humor.

A celebration of Larry’s adventurous life will be on Monday August 17 at 1:30 pm, at Rankin Presbyterian Church, 420 Clayton Street in Brush, CO. Coffee and cookies will follow in the church’s Fellowship Hall.
