Larry Bain Johnson, 80, passed away Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at his home in Fort Morgan.

He was born July 19, 1937 in Fort Morgan to Edwin & Delta (Phelps) Johnson. The family lived in Oregon for some time when Larry was a child, but they resided in Fort Morgan most of his life.

Larry served his country in the U.S. Marines and was a proud veteran. When Larry turned 18, he and his brother Gordon, and his dear friend Art Kalous all enlisted at the same time. He loved his time being stationed in Kodiak, Alaska. He said it was one of the most beautiful places on earth.

He married Archie Bell Steger in February of 1981.

Larry worked in the oilfield for the majority of his life. It was a job that he loved and was very passionate about. He could still point out nearly every well he ever drilled, and tell you who his crew was at the time. He spent a year working for Santa Fe Drilling overseas, he drilled wells in Iran working with the locals there. While in the Middle East, he even worked on an off-shore drilling rig. After one week, he told them to take him back to land! Both of Larry's daughters were taught the role of "worm". He also taught them to throw chain. One of Larry's favorite sayings to his rig hands was "my daughter can throw chain better than that". He was an avid fisherman, spending countless hours fishing the lakes and streams of Colorado and Kansas. He raced stockcars in the 1970's, winning 38 trophies driving number 59. Larry loved to weld his own creations, many of which can still be seen in yards all around Fort Morgan. Hunting arrowheads was a weekly adventure he took with his brothers. They would spend hours walking around Pawnee Buttes and the fields of Kentucky hunting for treasures. Larry would often only have to take ten steps before he found one. He was always very lucky. That luck also held out with Poker games with his brothers. His brother Randy said Larry always made the game good. He enjoyed old country music as well as Elvis. Larry was the type of man who would do anything for anyone, always willing to lend a helping hand. He loved his grandchildren. He made sure each one had a tool kit, and jumper cables when they first got their driver's license. Above all else, his faith and trust in God was most important to him. A member of Platte Valley Baptist Church in Fort Morgan, Larry was looking forward to attending church in their brand new building just east of Fort Morgan.

Larry is survived by two daughters, Becky (Johnson) Robison of Fort Morgan, and Cindy (Johnson) Diehl of Gulf Shores, AL; his stepson, Archie David Steger of Denver; two brothers, Randy Johnson and Glen Johnson, both of Fort Morgan; five grandchildren, Heather (Robison) Dettmer of Fleming, Alicia Robison of Glenwood Springs, Faith Robison-Vogeler of New Jersey, and Hannah Diehl and Clawson Diehl, both of Gulf Shores. He is also survived by his three great grandchildren, Paige, Corbin, and Reed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife; and three brothers, Roger, Gordon, and Larry.

Visitation will be Sunday, December 10th from 2 – 4 PM at the Heer Mortuary in Fort Morgan.

Funeral services will be Monday, December 11th at 10:00 AM at Platte Valley Baptist Church, 708 Warner Street in Fort Morgan. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery.
