Obituary

Larry Gerald Unrein, "Butch", 74, lifelong area resident, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, September 14, 2016 at his home in Fort Morgan, surrounded by his family.

Larry was born November 4, 1941 in Padroni, CO to Wendelin & Opal (Kloberdanz) Unrein. In his youth, Larry was raised on a family farm around the Merino and Sterling areas. He attended schools in Sterling until the age of 17 when he enlisted in the Navy with his mother's permission. Then he set sail on the USS Reclaimer ARS-42 in 1958. While Larry was in the Navy he rescued, beached, and repaired ships, and participated in Operation Dominic. He was honorably discharged in 1964. Larry married Shirley Hergenreter in 1965 and together they raised four children. Larry worked in numerous areas of construction, including the building of the Pawnee Power Plant and numerous skyscrapers in Denver. He had a maintenance supervisor career in the meat processing industry for over 30 years until he retired in 2005.

Larry was a member of Saint Helena's Catholic Church and the Elks Lodge. He was a very generous and caring person. Larry enjoyed fishing camping, riding his lawnmower and woodworking. One of his highlights was catching a 42" Northern Pike in Canada. He enjoyed spending time in his garage tinkering. It didn't matter the time of day, Larry always had a craving for sweets. Larry valued most of his time spent with is kids and grandchildren.

Survivors include his four children, Julie Stovell and her husband, Joe of Alpine, TX, Brenda Wallace and her husband, Jason, Brad Unrein, and Brian Unrein and his wife, Amy, all of Fort Morgan. He is also survived by his sisters and brother, Virginia Farner of Commerce City, Donald Unrein and his wife, Charlene of Cheyenne, WY, Louise Tompkins and her husband, Guy of Sterling, Georgine Wagner and her husband, Glenn of Aurora, Genevieve Price and her husband, John of Salida, and Peggy Dowis of Gunnison; nine grandchildren, Jaelyn, Morgen, Lj, Maxwell, Courtney, Kaitlyn, Spencer, Carley, and Andrew; his three great grandchildren, Keegan, Tallie, and Prairie. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, Jeffery Unrein; his father, Wendelin Unrein; his mother, Opal (Kloberdanz) Unrein; and his former spouse, Shirley (Hergenreter) Unrein.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, September 21st at 10:00 AM at Saint Helena's Catholic Church. Inurnment will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Fort Morgan.
