Obituary

Leo Day August, 91, longtime resident of Brush, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 9, 2023 at the North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley with family at his side.

Leo was born on May 23, 1931 in McCook, Nebraska to Bill and Esther August.  From Nebraska, the family moved to Otis, Colorado, then moved south of Brush in 1936.  In his early years, he participated in several sports and FFA in school, and developed a love of farming and ranching while working on their family farm.

Leo met the sunshine of his life, Bonnie Miller, at the Brush Roller Rink.  On August 23,1953, they were married in Fort Morgan.  Together they had three boys and two girls, and they all contributed to the success of the ranch.

Leo became a Freemason over 65 years ago and Masonry became such an important part of his life.  He and Bonnie were also members of the Order of the Eastern Star and Leo spent several years as Worthy Patron of the Brush Chapter.  He was also a member of the Morgan County Shrine Club, El Jebel Shriners, Morgan County Cattleman's Association and the Brush Rural Fire Protection District Board.

In his later years, Leo enjoyed spending time with his growing family, tending his yard, riding his horse Buck, walking his dogs and bowling with friends.  He would always do whatever he could to help his family and friends, expecting nothing in return.  He strived to keep himself fit and active through his whole life.  Leo was a true family man, a true Mason and a true cowboy who always had his hand out for a welcome handshake.

He is survived by four children, Luan August (Pat Gebauer) of Hillrose, Patti King of Fort Morgan, Roger August (Julie) of Pagosa Springs, Rex August (Trish) of Brush, one sister, Jean Reinhart of Loveland, eleven grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Bonnie, his infant son Gary, his parents and one sister, Kathleen Davis.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 16, 2023 at 2:00 pm at the United Methodist Church in Brush.
