Leona McCorkle passed away on April 23, 2011, at Valley View Villa in Fort Morgan, Colorado, where she had been a resident for four years. She passed away just a few days following her 92nd birthday. Services to celebrate her life will be held Monday, May 2, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, 1100 West Platte Avenue, with Reverend Richard Bachman officiating. Leona was born April 14, 1919, in Fort Morgan, to Lena and Henry Troudt, the fifth of their six children. Her parents were German immigrants from Russia who had settled in Morgan County to farm. Leona had memories of working in the beet fields as a young girl. Following her father's death during the Great Depression she quit school at age 13 to work in helping support her mom and sister. She initially worked for the WPA sewing and her specialties were baby clothes and hand stitched buttonholes. She was doing clerical work tracking Morgan County commodities when she met and married William (Bill) McCorkle on July 6, 1941. She and Bill had five children – Rockne, Vicki, Nicki, Cindy and John. Bill passed away unexpectedly in 1964 when their youngest children were ages 4 and 9, and Leona continued to raise and nurture the family. She worked at Fay Lee Fabrics and later Conrad's dress shop until her retirement. Except for three years in Denver early in her marriage, Leona lived her entire life in Fort Morgan. Leona is survived by her five children and their spouses: Rocky and Pat McCorkle of Palmetto, Florida, Vicki and Gene Fritzler of Fort Morgan, Nicki and Marv Truhe of Broomfield, Colorado, Cindy and Craig Naill of Silverthorne, Colorado, and John and Lisa McCorkle of Greeley, Colorado; one sister, Mabel Ingmire of Pueblo; twelve grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her brother Louie Troudt; three sisters: Esther Troudt, Betty Ross, and Katie Massengale; and her grandson, Jason Truhe. Leona is lovingly remembered as being totally devoted to her children, her grandchildren, and her great grandchildren. She had an incredible work ethic and was tireless in helping her children and their families, lovingly babysitting grandchildren, and being a great role model for everyone.
