LEONARD RALPH WASHBURN, 85, died Friday, April 29, 2011 at his home in Fort Morgan. He was born July 3, 1925 in Wannamaker, SD to Arthur L. & Clara E. (Stainbrook) Washburn. He grew up in South Dakota until, at age eleven, his family moved to Colorado. Leonard served in the U.S. Army. He was a sergeant at the time of his honorable discharge. He married Peggy Joan Messenger on May 24, 1947. The Washburn's farmed and ranched in the area for many years until 1970, when Leonard took a job as a custodian for Baker School in Fort Morgan. He retired in 1991. Leonard enjoyed his days on the farm and he especially enjoyed his horses, which he also had a passion for riding. He was also an avid reader. Survivors include his three daughters, Maggie Atkinson of Fleming, CO, Rosie Stephens of Maumelle, AR, and Tammy Nelson of Bismarck, ND; his brother, Dale Washburn of Prospect Valley, CO; seven grandchildren, Shanna Franklin, Brandon Stephens, Sara Atkinson, Ryan Atkinson, Scott Washburn, Christopher Washburn, and Megan Nelson. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Elsie Whitaker, Eleanor Morehead, and Opal Morehead; three brothers, Lawrence Washburn, George Washburn, and Leon Washburn; his wife, Peggy Washburn; his son, Michael Washburn; and his daughter, Donna Lasko. Graveside services will be Friday, May 6th at 11:30 AM in Riverside Cemetery in Fort Morgan. In lieu of flowers or memorial donations, the family asks that you remember someone that you love and do something kind for them.
