Lois Varner, 92, former long-time resident of Fort Morgan, died Saturday, March 16, 2013 at Collier Hospice Center in Wheat Ridge. She was born May 11, 1920 in Burkburnett, TX to John William and Gertrude Fishpaw. She moved with her family to Delaware, OK where she grew up and attended school, graduating from Delaware High School. She participated avidly and successfully in girls basketball during those years. Later she received her associate degree from Coffeeville College in Coffeeville, KS. In 1942 she married Ralph E. Varner in Phoenix, AZ while he was serving in the Army Air Corps. Following WWII the couple returned to their roots in Oklahoma before moving to Fort Morgan in 1956. Mr. Varner, former Fort Morgan City Superintendent, preceded her in death in 1986. She was also preceded in death by her two brothers and five sisters. Lois was an avid golfer, bowler and bridge player during her many years in Fort Morgan. Lois enjoyed the camaraderie of her friends. She was a member of the D.O.E.S and also the United Methodist Church before leaving Fort Morgan a few years ago due to health issues. Survivors include two daughters, Catherine Fletcher (Louis) of Castle Rock, CO and Judith Fries (Robert) of Lakewood, CO; six beloved grandchildren; five cherished great grandchildren; and much loved nieces and nephews. A Graveside service will be held on Friday, March 22, 2013 at 1:30 PM in Memory Gardens. Visitation will also be Friday from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Heer Mortuary Chapel in Fort Morgan.
