Loyd A. Musgrave, 100, a resident of the Hoyt & Fort Morgan communities for over 95 years, passed away Friday, December 20, 2013, at the Valley View Villa Nursing Home in Fort Morgan. He was born March 6, 1913, in Danberry, NE, to Thomas & Lena Musgrave. Loyd graduated from FMHS in 1930. He attended elementary and middle school at the Mountain View School in Adams County. Following graduation he attended the CMTC military training school at Fort Logan, CO. Shortly after completing that school Loyd moved back to the area and began farming with his Father. In 1936 he worked with the WPA program helping to build bridges on Hiway 36. He farmed North of Shamrock, and in 1938 moved near Hoyt where he continued to farm most of his life. On May 27, 1938, Loyd married Phyllis Curry at Adena, CO. Loyd was very involved in the communities where he lived. He was one of the original members of the North Kiowa BijouWater District and served as its secretary for over 40 years. He drilled his first irrigation well on his property in 1945. On his farming operation, he planted pinto beans, alfalfa, sugar beets, barley, and irrigated and dry land wheat. He was a 4-H leader in the Hoyt & Big Antelope 4-H Club and had served as a counselor at the 4-H Camps. He grew up attending the American Sunday School Union Church at Mt. View School. He was a member of the Adena Chapel, and then the Hoyt Sunday School, where he was a founder and board member and remained active for over 70 years. At various times he was also a member of the Home Presbyterian Church, the United Presbyterian Church and the Wiggins Community Church. He also served as a counselor at the Presbyterian Church Camp at Allenspark when his boys were growing up. He served as a board member briefly for both the Wiggins Co-Op , and the Hoyt Community Center. Survivors include his wife of 75 years, Phyllis; 2 sons, Jerard of Wiggins and Larry of Byers, CO; 1 Foster Brother, Wilber Roper of Citrus Heights, CA; 6 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 6 brothers, 2 sisters, 3 - ½ sisters, 1 foster brother, and his parents. Funeral services will be Saturday, December 28, at 10:30 AM at the Wiggins Community Church. Interment will follow in the Hoyt Cemetery. The Heer Mortuary of Fort Morgan is entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
