Marc S. Walker, O.D., 57, died Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at his home in Fort Morgan from complications associated with his lengthy battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig's Disease. He was born on April 28, 1953 in Espanola, NM to Donald I. and Ruth R. Walker. For most of his childhood the family lived in Wheat Ridge, CO where he learned to enjoy camping, fishing, hiking, skiing, basketball and music. The family was transferred to Idaho Falls, ID, in 1970 where he graduated from Skyline High School in 1971 and subsequently attended the University of Idaho in Moscow. In 1975 he took a position with Exxon Nuclear Co. at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory and worked in the reprocessing of military research nuclear fuels while he completed his degree in Chemistry. In 1976, he met Ann Kathleen McMullen and they were married on March 10, 1978 in Idaho Falls. In 1980 they moved to Portland, OR so he could attend optometry school. He obtained his doctorate, graduating with honors from Pacific University, College of Optometry in 1985. He completed internships at the P.U Portland Clinic and Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Denver. In August 1985 the family moved to Fort Morgan where he associated with Dr. Jack Caldwell and eventually took over his practice as Family Vision Clinic and Optical. In 1996 the practice was moved into its new building at its current location on Platte Ave. Dr. Walker truly enjoyed his 23 years of practicing optometry and getting to know his patients on a personal level. He derived a special gratification in seeing the academic and behavioral improvements of his pediatric patients who benefitted from Vision Therapy. He was a lifetime member of both the American Optometric Association and the Colorado Optometric Association, an associate of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development and the Optometric Education Program Foundation. For several years he organized and ran the Annual Colorado Vision Training Conference. Civically, Dr. Walker served on the Board of Education for the RE-3 school district, was active with the Boy Scouts of America Troop 22 and was a member of the Sunrise Optimists Club of Fort Morgan where he co-chaired the Optimists soccer program for several years. He was the Children's Choir director for several years at the United Presbyterian Church. He also sang with Singers Limited in Fort Morgan for many years and also the United Methodist Church adult choir. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Fort Morgan. He is survived by his wife, Ann, their two children Kathryn M. Mills and husband Kevin of Sherwood, Oregon and Brian J. Walker of Fort Morgan, his sister Judith E. Walker of Portland, Oregon and his brother, David L. Walker of Warren, Oregon. He was preceded in death by both of his parents. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, June 5, 2010 at 10:30 am at the United Methodist Church in Fort Morgan.
